The Port of Genoa has a rich history that traces back to the Roman times, when it was established as a trade hub. However, its status of one of Europe's leading seaports was achieved in the Middle Ages, under the Genoese Republic. This bustling port city was a major player in the maritime trade routes, particularly with the East.
In the 19th century, the Port of Genoa underwent significant expansion under the Kingdom of Italy. Its geographical position and natural harbor made it a strategic point for commercial and military activities. Today, it continues to be a crucial port, serving as a major gateway for goods and passengers, and is considered one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean Sea.

The port of La Spezia, located in the Liguria region of Italy, has a rich and storied history that dates back to ancient times. The modern port traces its origins back to the 1800s, but the harbor has been in use for much longer. In fact, it was an important naval base for the Romans and was later utilized by the Genoese during the Middle Ages.
In the 1860s, under the direction of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy, the port was significantly developed and expanded, solidifying its role as a vital military and commercial hub. During World War II, the harbor was heavily bombed by the Allies, causing significant damage. However, La Spezia managed to recover and rebuild, and it remains an important port to this day, serving both commercial and military purposes.
In the early morning arrival in Civitavecchia. Civitavecchia is an Italian port town in the province of Roma in the central Italian region of Lazio. It is located on the Tyrrhenian Sea, 80 km west-northwest of Rome. The area has been inhabited since the Etruscan period. Translated as Civitavecchia (literally Old Town), it is the prototype of a classical Italian settlement with roots in antiquity (it has been shown that the site was inhabited in Etruscan times), which has undergone a wealth of development and change over its more than a thousand years of existence, traces of which are still visible today. It was a major Roman port and today you can still visit over a hundred churches. Possibility of an independent optional excursion to Rome.
Civitavecchia, located on the western coast of Italy along the Tyrrhenian Sea, is a historic port city that has served as a vital gateway to Rome for centuries. Its name, meaning “ancient town” in Italian, reflects its origins, which date back to Etruscan times. However, it was during the Roman Empire that Civitavecchia gained prominence, when Emperor Trajan ordered the construction of the port in the early 2nd century CE to relieve congestion from Rome's main port at Ostia. The harbor, known as Centumcellae in ancient times, became an important hub for trade and naval operations. Remnants of this period, such as the Trajan's Arch and sections of the original Roman harbor, still exist today, showcasing the city’s deep historical roots.
Throughout the Middle Ages, Civitavecchia's strategic importance made it a contested site among various powers, including the Papal States, which controlled the city for much of its later history. It became heavily fortified, with landmarks such as the Forte Michelangelo, a formidable 16th-century fortress commissioned by Pope Julius II and partially designed by Michelangelo himself. In modern times, Civitavecchia remains a key port, serving as the main maritime link between Rome and the Mediterranean. It is also a popular departure point for cruises and ferries, connecting Italy to various islands and neighboring countries. With its rich history and ongoing role as a bustling port city, Civitavecchia continues to blend its ancient heritage with its modern significance.
The Balearic Islands are paradise on earth. A stroll through the centre of Palma, especially in the evening, is an unforgettable experience. Walking past the Cathedral of Light, the old town hall, the royal palace or the olive tree over 2000 years old is truly magical. The finishing touch is, of course, a visit to the outdoor café in Plaza D Mayor, where you can enjoy a great authentic sangria. But make sure you get back to the ship on time.MSC transfer to and from the port required.
The port of Palma de Mallorca, located on the southern coast of the island, has a rich history that spans several centuries. It was initially used by the Romans in 123 BC, serving as a strategic naval base during the conquest of the Balearic Islands. Over the centuries, it has been used by various civilizations including the Byzantines, Moors, and Christians, reflecting the island's tumultuous history.
In the 19th century, the port began to experience significant growth as it became a key hub for trade and transportation within the Mediterranean region. The modern port was established in 1872, and it underwent major expansions and improvements in the 20th century to accommodate larger vessels. Today, the Port of Palma de Mallorca is one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean, serving both commercial and tourist traffic.
Barcelona is a place where history meets modern life, culture mixes with delicious food, and every street has a story waiting to be told. Don't miss the chance to experience Barcelona at its best - from the Gothic Quarters to world-famous monuments like the Sagrada Familia, from sunny beaches to gourmet experiences that will spoil your palate.
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, boasts a history that dates back over two millennia. Founded as a Roman colony called Barcino in the 1st century BCE, its early development is still visible in remnants such as Roman walls and structures in the Gothic Quarter. During the Middle Ages, Barcelona flourished as a major maritime power within the Crown of Aragon, becoming a vital center for trade and culture. The city's medieval landmarks, like the Barcelona Cathedral, reflect this period of growth and significance. However, political upheavals in later centuries, including the decline of Catalonia's independence, temporarily slowed its development.
The 19th century marked Barcelona’s cultural and architectural renaissance. The Catalan Renaissance and the Modernisme movement brought artists and architects like Antoni Gaudí, whose works, including Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló, transformed the city into a showcase of creativity. The 1992 Olympics further revitalized Barcelona, modernizing its infrastructure and boosting its global profile. Today, Barcelona is a thriving cultural, economic, and tourist hub, blending its rich history with modern urban life. Its iconic landmarks, Mediterranean coastline, and vibrant Catalan identity make it one of the world’s most beloved cities.
A beautiful resort on the French Riviera. And a short distance away, a place where thousands of tourists go. Film lovers in particular will be familiar with the Cannes World Film Festival. Cannes, located on the French Riviera, has a rich history that stretches back over two millennia. The area was first settled by the Ligurians and later became part of the Roman Empire. By the 5th century, the nearby Îles de Lérins played a significant role in the region's development, with the establishment of the Lérins Abbey, which brought religious and cultural influence to Cannes. During the Middle Ages, the town remained a small fishing village under the control of the monks of the abbey. Cannes endured centuries of relative obscurity and turbulence, including pirate invasions, until the modern period transformed its fortunes.
The turning point for Cannes came in the 19th century, when Lord Brougham, a British aristocrat, visited the area in 1834. Enthralled by its beauty, he built a holiday villa and inspired other wealthy Europeans to do the same, turning Cannes into a glamorous winter retreat for the elite. Over the following decades, Cannes grew into a world-famous resort town, particularly after the launch of the Cannes Film Festival in 1946. The festival cemented Cannes’ status as an international symbol of luxury, culture, and celebrity. Today, while celebrated for its glitz and glamour, Cannes retains remnants of its past, such as the Le Suquet old town and the historic abbey on Île Saint-Honorat, offering visitors a blend of history and modern sophistication.

A few lines about me. My name is Helena and I have always enjoyed writing or finding new information, so I decided to study journalism. But during my studies I found another love - Korean, which gave me the opportunity to live in beautiful Seoul, South Korea. After my return, I devoted myself mainly to writing about Formula 1, which I still love now, and motorsport is still with me in my spare time. I came back to my native Wallachia, where I joined the Riviera Tour to show the beauty of the world to other people. Maybe one day I will show the beauty of South Korea to you too.
