The port of Kiel in Germany, situated on the Baltic Sea, has a long and rich history. Its origins can be traced back to the 13th century when it was founded by Count Adolf IV of Holstein. In 1242, Kiel was granted city rights and quickly developed into a significant maritime and trade hub due to its strategic location.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Kiel gained prominence as a major shipbuilding center. The city's port was home to the German Imperial Navy and later the Kriegsmarine of Nazi Germany. During World War II, the city and its port were severely damaged, but they were rebuilt in the post-war years. Today, the port of Kiel is one of the busiest in Germany, serving as a crucial gateway for cargo, passengers, and cruise ships.
A visit to this city is truly impressive. We'll stop by the Little Mermaid, take a few photos with the Royal Guard, whose bearskin hats are famous the world over. Did you know they weigh up to 8 kg? More from our delegate. A stroll through the city centre is very charming and relaxing. And you can even try a roller coaster. MSC Cruises transfer from the port to the city centre is required (approx. €17).
The history of the Port of Copenhagen, Denmark's largest harbour, dates back to the Middle Ages when it played a crucial role in the city's growth and development. The port was originally established by Bishop Absalon in the 12th century, who built a fortress on the island of Slotsholmen, creating a natural harbour which would become the heart of Copenhagen.
Through the centuries, the Port of Copenhagen grew and modernised. During the industrial revolution in the 19th century, the port expanded, with new docks and warehouses constructed to accommodate increasing trade. The port was a significant hub for Denmark's international trade and naval power. In the 20th century, the port faced challenges as industry moved away from the city centre, but it has since transformed into a bustling area with residential, business and recreational facilities.
Already in the western fjords, you'll notice that in Norway at this time of year, daylight barely fades. Even in the late hours, as we sail through the fjords, you can photograph stunning natural phenomena. In the morning, we briefly anchor at Hellesylt to drop off clients interested in MSC optional excursions, then continue on to Geiranger.
Hellesylt is a picturesque village located in the Stranda Municipality in the Møre og Romsdal county of Norway. It is nestled at the head of the Sunnylvsfjorden, a branch of the famous Geirangerfjord, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, characterized by steep mountains, cascading waterfalls, and lush greenery, making it a popular destination for tourists exploring Norway's fjord landscapes.
Historically, Hellesylt has been a key point for travelers venturing into the fjord areas. The village's location made it an important stopover for people traveling by sea, especially before modern road networks were established. The Hellesylt Waterfall, which runs through the center of the village, has been a significant landmark, highlighting the village's scenic charm. Over the years, Hellesylt has hosted numerous visitors who come to experience its idyllic setting and to embark on fjord cruises, particularly those heading to nearby Geiranger, one of Norway's most visited tourist sites. Today, Hellesylt continues to thrive as a gateway to the breathtaking natural wonders of western Norway.
In the morning we anchor at Hellesylt and after a short while sail on to Geiranger, considered the most beautiful of the Norwegian fjords. The port of Geiranger lies at the end of the eponymous fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by monumental mountains with iconic waterfalls. It serves as a key gateway to the renowned viewpoints and hiking trails that offer some of the most spectacular panoramic views in all of Norway. After docking, you can take a stroll through the charming little town of the same name.
Optionally, you can join the delegate on an amazing sightseeing bus trip to the fjord platforms, offering magnificent natural scenery (surcharge approx. 1,390 CZK).
Geiranger, a small village nestled at the head of the Geirangerfjord in western Norway, has a history deeply tied to its rugged natural surroundings. The area was originally settled by small farming communities, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Viking Age. The steep slopes of the fjord were home to isolated farms that clung to the cliffs, and the residents relied on agriculture, livestock, and fishing to sustain themselves in this remote and challenging environment. Historical records also show that the Geirangerfjord was an important route for trade and communication, as Norway’s fjords served as natural highways connecting settlements along the coast.
Over time, as transportation improved in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Geiranger began to welcome visitors drawn by its stunning landscapes. By the late 1800s, the village became a stop for steamboats carrying tourists exploring Norway's famous fjords, marking the start of its transformation from a secluded farming community to a sought-after travel destination. Despite the growth in tourism, Geiranger has remained steeped in its historical roots, with many of its traditional farms preserved as cultural landmarks. Today, Geiranger’s history is remembered not only in its preserved architecture and sites but also in its enduring connection to Norway’s heritage and the natural beauty that has shaped the lives of its inhabitants for centuries.
Ålesund, a city on the west coast of Norway, looks as if it were taken from a fairy tale. Its distinctive architecture, born from the ashes of the great fire of 1904, creates a perfect blend of history and modernity, where every alley tells its own story. Depending on availability, we'll board a tourist train or sightseeing bus that will take you through the port city up to a viewpoint on the steep hill above the town, offering magnificent views of the city and the entire fjord. This scenic ride is followed by a walking tour of the city (train/bus ride with delegate for a surcharge of approx. 1,290 CZK).
The history of Ålesund is inseparably linked to fishing and maritime trade, which have shaped the city since the Middle Ages. However, it only gained official city status in 1848. A crucial milestone that forever changed the face of the entire area was the catastrophic fire in January 1904. During one frosty night, almost the entire wooden core of the city burned down, leaving thousands homeless. This tragedy, however, laid the foundation for its unique beauty today.
The city's reconstruction after the fire took place in a record time of just three years, thanks to massive international aid, significantly supported by the German Emperor Wilhelm II. Architects then chose a unified modern style – Art Nouveau, creating a cohesive architectural gem. In the 20th and 21st centuries, Ålesund has grown into a modern center of the region Sunnmøre, which masterfully preserves its cultural heritage and today serves as one of the most sought-after ports in all of Norway.
City tour and viewpoint from Mount Aksla: A hike up 418 steps or a comfortable bus ride to the famous Aksla viewpoint, from where the iconic panorama of the entire Ålesund spread over the islands opens up. Followed by a walk through the Art Nouveau center with a guide.
Historic islands of Giske and Godøy: A trip through the undersea tunnels to nearby islands that are the cradle of Viking history. You will visit the marble church on Giske and the picturesque fishing village Alnes with a historic lighthouse on the island of Godøy.
Sunnmøre Open-Air Museum: A journey to the unique open-air museum, which showcases dozens of historic Norwegian houses, traditional Viking ships and brings to life the harsh existence of ancient Nordic fishermen and farmers.
The village of Flåm is best known for the world's steepest railway from Flåm to Myrdal. This panoramic ride of approximately 1.5 hours will enchant you with incredible natural scenery of Norwegian nature, waterfalls, cliffs and local fauna and flora. A stop directly beneath a 93-metre waterfall is a truly unique experience. The train excursion is optional at a surcharge of approx. 3,990 CZK and can only be booked when signing the travel contract. The delegate accompanies this optional excursion at this destination.
Flåm, a small village nestled in the heart of Norway's fjord region, has a rich history deeply connected to its stunning natural surroundings and its role as a transportation hub. The settlement's origins date back over a thousand years, with evidence suggesting it was primarily an agricultural community. Its name, "Flåm," is derived from the Old Norse word "Flá," meaning "plain" or "flat piece of land," a reference to the fertile valley floor where the village is located. Historically, Flåm's position along the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord, made it an important location for trade and communication between Norway's coastal and inland regions.
The most significant development in Flåm's history came in the early 20th century with the construction of the Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana), which opened in 1940. Designed to connect Flåm to the Bergen Railway at Myrdal, it allowed easier access to the remote village and played a critical role in transporting goods and passengers. The railway, a marvel of engineering at the time, transformed Flåm from a quiet farming community into a key transportation link and, eventually, a major tourist destination. Today, the Flåm Railway not only serves as a historical landmark but also as a testament to the village’s evolution and its enduring connection to Norway's cultural and natural heritage.
Breakfast in the morning, then disembarkation and departure from the port back to the Czech Republic. During the return journey, you will learn about new ships and upcoming destinations. The return transport includes two hot snacks, coffee, tea, cappuccino and hot chocolate. Arrival in Prague approx. 21:00, Brno approx. 23:30.
