History
Christchurch was founded in 1850 by the Canterbury Association, led by John Robert Godley, as an Anglican settlement designed to recreate English society in the New World. Named after Christ Church College, Oxford, the city grew rapidly with the arrival of the Canterbury Pilgrims aboard the first four ships. The discovery of gold in nearby Otago in the 1860s brought prosperity and growth to the region.
The city's character was forever changed by the devastating February 2011 earthquake, which claimed 185 lives and destroyed much of the historic city center, including the iconic ChristChurch Cathedral. However, this tragedy sparked remarkable resilience and innovation. Under leaders like Mayor Lianne Dalziel and with community spirit, Christchurch has rebuilt itself as a modern, sustainable city while honoring its heritage, becoming a symbol of hope and renewal worldwide.
