History

The Lithuanian port city of Klaipeda has a rich and storied history. It was first mentioned in historical records in the 13th century under the name Memel, after the river on which it is located. The city was founded by the Teutonic Knights, a German medieval military order, and for many centuries it was part of the Prussian state and later Germany.

After World War I, the Treaty of Versailles transferred the city and the surrounding region to the newly independent country of Lithuania. However, in 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II, Nazi Germany forced Lithuania to return the region under the Munich Agreement. After the war, Klaipeda became part of the Soviet Union, and it wasn't until Lithuania regained its independence in 1990 that the city returned to Lithuanian control.
