The town is famous for its proximity to Vøringsfossen, one of Norway’s most spectacular waterfalls, where water plunges nearly 182 meters into a rocky gorge – a sight that leaves visitors in awe.

Eidfjord also provides access to the Hardangervidda National Park, Europe’s largest mountain plateau, offering endless opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife spotting, including reindeer. Visitors can learn more about the area’s unique natural and cultural history at the Hardangervidda Nature Centre, which features interactive exhibits and panoramic views. History

Eidfjord, a picturesque municipality in Vestland County, Norway, has a rich history dating back to ancient times. The area has been inhabited for centuries, with evidence of Viking Age burial mounds found near the village. Historically, Eidfjord was part of the larger Ulvik municipality until it became an independent municipality in 1891. However, it was later merged with Ullensvang in 1964 before regaining its independence in 1977. The Old Eidfjord Church, built in 1309, stands as a testament to the region’s long-standing cultural and religious heritage.

Situated at the end of the Eid Fjord, a branch of the Hardangerfjord, Eidfjord has long been a vital location for trade and travel. The municipality is known for its stunning natural landscapes, including the famous Vøringsfossen waterfall and the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. Over time, Eidfjord has developed into a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its breathtaking scenery and historical significance. Today, it remains a key gateway to Norway’s fjord region, blending its historical roots with modern tourism and infrastructure.
