History
The Freeport Harbor in the Bahamas, a deep-water harbor, was officially opened in 1956. It was the brainchild of Wallace Groves, an American financier and a convict of the Wall Street crash of 1929. He established the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) with the aim of transforming Grand Bahama into a free-trade zone.
After the Harbor's establishment, the Hawksbill Creek Agreement was signed in 1955 between the government of the Bahamas and the GBPA. This agreement gave GBPA the right to 138,000 acres of swamp and scrub, which they later transformed into what is known as the city of Freeport. Over the years, Freeport Harbor has grown into one of the world's largest man-made harbors, capable of handling the largest ships in the world.
