Port Aqaba (Petra)

and its characteristics

Aqaba is located at the southern tip of the country on the Red Sea Gulf of Aqaba, close to the borders with Israel and Saudi Arabia. This amazing city attracts many international travellers due to its rich historical heritage. It serves as an important stop for cruise ships crossing the Red Sea and is also the country's main cargo port.

Aqaba boasts a number of captivating tourist attractions, from the ancient city of Petra, which lies about 2 hours from the port and is one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World, to the fascinating waters of the Red Sea, rich with coral reefs. Its visitors often indulge in underwater exploration, diving or snorkelling to marvel at the diverse underwater life on the world's northernmost coral reef. In addition, local markets offer a unique shopping experience for a wide variety of handicrafts, jewelry and traditional Jordanian clothing.

History

Aqaba, located in southern Jordan along the Red Sea, has been a significant trading hub and port since ancient times. Known as Ayla in antiquity, the city was an essential stop on trade routes connecting the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt, and the Levant. Its strategic location made it a key center for commerce during the Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods. Archaeological sites, such as the ruins of the early Islamic city of Ayla, bear testament to its rich history.

Under Ottoman rule, Aqaba served as a critical port, and during World War I, it played a pivotal role in the Arab Revolt, famously captured by T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") and Arab forces. Today, Aqaba is a bustling coastal city known for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and luxury resorts. It serves as Jordan's only seaport and a gateway to the Red Sea, attracting visitors with a mix of historical significance and modern charm.

Trip tip: Rock town of Petra

The rock city of Petra is rightly listed among the seven wonders of the world for its beauty and mystery. It was originally called Rebecca and is also known in the Bible as Sela. In ancient times it was an oasis of wealth, yet over time it fallen into obscurity, where it remained until the early 19th century, when the Swiss explorer and traveller Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it for the world disguised as an Arab. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1985 and is one of UNESCO's most famous entries.
