History

The Port of Durban, known as the largest and busiest shipping terminal in sub-Saharan Africa, has a rich history that dates back to 1824. It was established by British Lieutenant, F.G Farewell and a group of 25 men who arrived from the Cape Colony and named the bay Port Natal.

Initially, the harbor was not accessible to large vessels due to a sandbar across the entrance, but in 1855, harbor engineer John Milne made the harbor accessible to larger vessels. The first steamship arrived in 1859, marking the beginning of Durban's trade boom. Today, the port handles up to 31.4 million tons of cargo each year.
