Port Argostoli (Kefalonia)

and its characteristics

Argostoli, the capital of the largest Ionian island Kefalonia, lies in a deep and calm bay that resembles a lake. Upon disembarking from the ocean liner you will find yourself on a wide waterfront lined with palm trees, where in the morning you can meet fishermen selling their catch directly from their boats, a sight often enjoyed by giant sea turtles Caretta caretta. The town itself is characterized by pastel facades, the cobblestone pedestrian zone Lithostroto filled with stylish shops, and the central square Vallianou, which comes alive especially after sunset.

The local lifestyle is the essence of island tranquility. There is no rush, and the biggest event of the day is the afternoon frappé coffee or an evening glass of local dry wine Robola at one of the family taverns. The local cuisine is driven by the famous Kefalonian meat pie kreatopita, fresh feta cheese baked in pastry with honey and wild herbs. Passengers can easily cross the historic De Bosset stone bridge that spans the bay in a few hours, visit archaeological gems, or cool off at nearby renowned beaches.

History

The history of Argostoli began to take shape more significantly in the year 1757, when the Venetians moved the island's capital here from the original castle of Saint George due to the safe bay. The Venetian influence, which gave the city an elegant Italian character, was complemented over the centuries by French and British rule. A significant architectural milestone was the British administration in the early 19th century when Swiss engineer Charles de Bosset built the famous bridge, still the longest stone bridge above sea level in the world.

The darkest and most important chapter of modern history was August 1953, when a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale struck all of Kefalonia. Argostoli was leveled to the ground, and almost nothing remained of the original Venetian architecture. However, the local residents rebuilt the city with immense effort, adhering to strict anti-seismic regulations and lower construction, which still preserved the traditional Ionian spirit. Today, Argostoli is a symbol of resilience and one of the most pleasant port towns in all of Greece.
