Port Argostoli (Cefalonia)

and its characteristics

Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, is a charming town nestled along the Ionian Sea. Its lively Vallianou Square is the heart of the town, featuring cafes, restaurants, and shops, while cultural gems like the Archaeological Museum and the Korgialenio Folklore Museum highlight the island's rich history and traditions.

Close to Argostoli, visitors can walk along the historic De Bosset Bridge for stunning views or explore natural wonders like Katavothres, where seawater vanishes into underground streams. Beautiful beaches such as Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos are nearby, offering golden sands and crystal-clear waters. Argostoli perfectly blends culture, nature, and relaxation.

History

Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, was established in the 18th century during Venetian rule, replacing the town of Agios Georgios as the island's administrative center. Its natural harbor made it a key hub for Mediterranean trade, and the town flourished under British rule in the 19th century, with improvements to its infrastructure and cultural institutions. After the 1864 Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece, Argostoli continued to thrive as a regional center.

Despite its growth, Argostoli faced major challenges during the Italian-German occupation in World War II and the devastating 1953 Ionian earthquake, which destroyed much of the town. Rebuilt with modern architecture, it retains landmarks like the De Bosset Bridge and Korgialenio Library. Today, Argostoli is a lively town blending history with natural beauty, attracting visitors with its harbor promenade, cultural sites, and traditional charm.
