Modern history of the Haifa port began in the late 19th century under Ottoman rule. In 1918, the British took over and significantly expanded the port, making it one of the largest in the eastern Mediterranean. After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the port played a crucial role in receiving Jewish immigrants. Today, it's one of Israel's main cargo shipping centers.
