History
Founded as Smyrna around 3000 BC, İzmir ranks among the Mediterranean's oldest continuously inhabited cities. The legendary poet Homer is believed to have lived here, and the city flourished under Greek, then Roman rule—Alexander the Great refounded it in the 4th century BC. As a major port in the Roman and Byzantine Empires, Smyrna became one of early Christianity's Seven Churches of Revelation.
The Ottoman Turks conquered the city in 1415, transforming it into a cosmopolitan trading hub where Greeks, Armenians, Jews, and Turks coexisted for centuries. This diversity ended tragically with the Great Fire of Smyrna in 1922 during the Greco-Turkish War, which devastated the city and displaced its Greek and Armenian populations. Under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the rebuilt city was renamed İzmir and became a symbol of modern Turkey—progressive, secular, and forward-looking while honoring its extraordinary past.
