History

Bodø was officially established as a town in 1816 and was initially a small trading post in Northern Norway, strategically located just north of the Arctic Circle. Its early economy revolved around the export of stockfish, a dried fish product that was an essential part of Norway’s trade. During World War II, the city faced devastation when German forces bombed it extensively in 1940, destroying much of its infrastructure. Following the war, Bodø underwent significant reconstruction, modernizing itself and emerging as a key center for transport and development in the region.

The city is surrounded by striking natural features, including the famous Saltstraumen, one of the strongest tidal currents in the world, and provides excellent views of phenomena like the midnight sun and northern lights due to its Arctic location. Bodø has also gained prominence in recent years for its growing cultural significance, being named the European Capital of Culture for 2024.
