History

The port of Hammerfest, located in Norway, has a rich and remarkable history. It was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838, but its history extends back for centuries. Hammerfest was an important fishing and Arctic hunting settlement for the Pomor trade with Russia.

In 1891, Hammerfest became the first town in Europe to have electric street lighting, using hydroelectric power from a nearby waterfall. During World War II, the town was completely destroyed by the retreating German forces. The town was rebuilt after the war, preserving its historical significance. Today, Hammerfest serves as an important service and supply base for the offshore petroleum industry.
