History

IJmuiden emerged from the grand 19th-century vision to link Amsterdam with the sea. Authorized by King William III in 1865 and championed by statesman Johan Rudolph Thorbecke, construction of the North Sea Canal and twin sea locks was completed in 1876, transforming windswept dunes into a bustling port town.

During World War II, IJmuiden’s strategic harbor and Fort IJmuiden, part of the German Atlantic Wall under Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, endured intense Allied bombardment. After liberation, the town rebuilt and modernized its port, solidifying IJmuiden’s place as one of Europe’s largest artificial harbors and preserving its proud maritime heritage.
