Al Fujayrah

Port Al Fujayrah

and its characteristics

Fujairah is the capital of the emirate of the same name in the United Arab Emirates. In 2013, it was home to half of the emirate's population, approximately 82,915. It offers its visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and cultural richness, making it a popular cruise stop. Its strategic location on the east coast of the United Arab Emirates, outside the Strait of Hormuz, is another advantage for cruise ships, providing easy accessibility.

In the city you will find a number of important historical sites, such as the imposing Fujairah Fortress overlooking the city, the small fortress of Al Bithnah or Al Hayl Castle hidden in a mountain valley near the city, which was occupied by the ruling family of the emirate until the 1970s. Also popular with tourists is the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, with a capacity of 28,000 worshippers, the second largest mosque in the Emirates (not to be confused with the mosque of the same name in the capital Abu Dhabi).

In addition to sightseeing, you can also go on excursions to beautiful beaches or picturesque mountain landscapes. The town's markets offer the opportunity to shop for a wide range of local goods and souvenirs.

History

The history of the Port of Fujairah dates back to the 1980s. The port was founded by Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, ruler of Fujairah, with a vision to make it the world's centre for oil storage and bunkering. In 2006, the port underwent a major expansion to become the world's third largest fuel shipping centre. Vitol Tank Terminals International built a 605,000 cubic metre oil terminal here. Later, in 2010, the port became the first in the Gulf Cooperation Council to offer a bunkering service, further cementing its position as a major player in the global maritime industry.
