5 reasons to go on a cruise to Santorini

The famous Greek island of Santorini needs no introduction. One look at the photo with its white houses, blue domes and steep cliffs and everyone knows which place it is. In this article, we'll take a closer look at this harbour - telling you which towns on the island are the best places to go, where to find the best beaches or the best wineries on the volcanic soil. At the end of the article, you'll also find a list of cruises with transport and delegate that you can join us on this amazing part of the world this year. Hold on to your hats, here we go!

1) White houses, blue domes and spectacular views - discover the capital city of Fira

The capital city of Fira is situated almost 300 m above the port town of Skala, which can be reached by tender directly from the boat. Fira can be accessed in several ways - by climbing 580 steps, by the regular cable car or from the Donkey Ridge. In Fira, you'll find everything that belongs to Santorini: whitewashed houses with blue shutters, picturesque churches with blue domes, winding cobbled streets with souvenir shops and countless cafes and restaurants variously perched on the cliff with spectacular views of the caldera. The town's prominent landmark is the Orthodox Church of Agios Theodori, a perfect example of traditional Greek architecture with its bright white walls and distinctive blue dome.

2) The jewel of the Aegean Sea with windmills - the northernmost town of Oia

The northernmost location on the island of Santorini is Oia. Its unusual quaintness lies in the small houses with typical Santorinian architecture, some of which are carved into the rock. The houses are painted white and the most typical ones have a blue dome. The view of the island of Thirassia and the whole Aegean Sea is magnificent. In the tworomantic windmills, which are beautifully visible from the

3) Swim at the black beaches of Kamari and Perissa

Among the popular tourist spots on Santorini are also several kilometres of beaches, made up of dark volcanic sand and in some places supplemented with pebbles. On these beaches you can enjoy a variety of water sports, including windsurfing, paragliding, jet skiing and water skiing. The beaches are equipped with sun loungers and umbrellas, and refreshments are available at local taverns.

4) Learn about the unique history of the island at the Akrotiri site

Akrotiri in Santorini is one of the most interesting archaeological sites in Greece and is an absolute must for any history buff or lover of ancient civilizations. This ancient city complex was until recently buried by an ash layer during the massive eruption of the Thera volcano in approximately 1627 BC, making it one of the best preserved examples of Minoan civilization.

5) Winery with volcanic soil and spectacular views

The volcanic nature of Santorini creates an exceptionally suitable environment for vine growing. The soil on Santorini is made up of volcanic dust, pumice stones and small pieces of solidified sand and lava. The most famous winery is Santo Wines, located just 4 km south of Fira. It is part of the traditional Greek village of Pyrgos and lies on the west coast of the island. Santo Wines is situated right on top of the caldera and attracts beautiful views. The winery also includes a small history museum. Here you can watch a short documentary about the cultivation of the vines on the island.
