This bustling port city was a major player in the maritime trade routes, particularly with the East.
In the 19th century, the Port of Genoa underwent significant expansion under the Kingdom of Italy. Its geographical position and natural harbor made it a strategic point for commercial and military activities. Today, it continues to be a crucial port, serving as a major gateway for goods and passengers, and is considered one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean Sea.

Over the centuries, the port has played a significant role in the economic and cultural development of the region, serving as a major hub for trade and transportation.
In the Middle Ages, the port became an important center for the Mediterranean trade. Despite periods of decline, it continued to flourish, especially during the Renaissance when it was modernized and fortified. Over the centuries, the port underwent various transformations, becoming a key infrastructure for the city. In the 19th century, modernization works were carried out, which included the construction of the canal and the first dock. Today, the Port of Valencia is ranked as the fifth busiest seaport in Europe, handling a significant amount of freight and millions of passengers annually.

In the 16th century, the port underwent significant transformation when the Spanish built a fortified wall around the city to protect it from pirate attacks. Cagliari is the capital of the island of Sardinia. It has over 230,000 inhabitants and is called Casteddu ("castle") in Sardinian. The city has a university and is an important port (connections especially to Genoa, Livorno, Civitavecchia, Naples and Palermo). Cagliari is situated between two bays of the Gulf of Cagliari, has an interesting medieval core, a beautiful Poetto beach and salt lakes with pink flamingos.
The atmosphere of this city is captivating for visitors. The vibrant life, the noisy traffic, the petrified history - you either love it or hate it! In Cagliari one doesn't feel like a tourist, here you experience the Sardinian everyday, you just belong. The ancient city of Carialis has been almost completely swallowed up by later development, but the remains of the Roman arena from the 2nd century AD remain. A walk through the medieval quarter is lovely.
Among the monuments of the medieval city, partly still protected by the Pisan walls with towers - Torre di San Pancrazio (in Piazza Indipendenza), or the bastion of Santa Catarina - there are some Gothic churches and some churches - especially the Cathedral of Santa Cecilia (completed in 1312). The Pisan-Romanesque cathedral was built in the 13th century but later rebuilt. It has an interesting Romanesque pulpit.

In the early morning arrival in Civitavecchia. Civitavecchia is an Italian port town in the province of Roma in the central Italian region of Lazio. It is located on the Tyrrhenian Sea, 80 km west-northwest of Rome. The area has been inhabited since the Etruscan period. Translated as Civitavecchia-literally Old Town, it is the prototype of a classical Italian settlement with roots in ancient times (it has been shown that the site was already inhabited in Etruscan times), which has undergone rich development and changes over its more than a thousand years of existence, traces of which are still visible today. It was a major Roman port and today you can still visit over a hundred churches.
The history of the Italian port Civitavecchia dates back to the 2nd century during the reign of Emperor Trajan. The port was established as the port of Rome and was originally known as Centumcellae. Its strategic location and well-constructed harbor made it a critical asset to the Roman Empire, facilitating both military and commercial operations.
Over the centuries, the port of Civitavecchia has faced numerous invasions and destructions. It was destroyed by Barbarossa in 828 AD and then rebuilt by Pope Innocent XII in the late 17th century. Today, Civitavecchia serves as a major port for ferry connections to destinations like Sicily, Sardinia and other parts of the Mediterranean. It is also a popular departure point for Mediterranean cruises.

Verona is the second largest city in Veneto, after Venice, and the historic city is surrounded on three sides by the Adige River. For its beauty and wealth of monuments, Verona is popular with tourists. The English playwright William Shakespeare set the action of his famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet there. We walk through the centre of the historic town through the elongated Piazza delle Erbe (Green Market) on the site of the Roman Forum, with its 13th-17th century town houses and palaces. In the middle of the square we see the Capitello, a 16th century pavilion on four columns, towards the NW there is a fountain with a Roman statue of the Madonna da Verona and further on a column with a Venetian lion. To the north, the Renaissance Palazzo Maffei, with its medieval tower and curious spiral staircase inside, closes the square. The city centre has roughly preserved the plan of a Roman city with a cross of streets, so orientation will be quite easy for us. Next, we depart for the Czech Republic.

A few lines about me. My name is Helena and I have always enjoyed writing or finding new information, so I decided to study journalism. But during my studies I found another love - Korean, which gave me the opportunity to live in beautiful Seoul, South Korea. After my return, I devoted myself mainly to writing about Formula 1, which I still love now, and motorsport is still with me in my spare time. I came back to my native Wallachia, where I joined the Riviera Tour to show the beauty of the world to other people. Maybe one day I will show the beauty of South Korea to you too.
