The Port of Genoa has a rich history that traces back to the Roman times, when it was established as a trade hub. However, its status of one of Europe's leading seaports was achieved in the Middle Ages, under the Genoese Republic. This bustling port city was a major player in the maritime trade routes, particularly with the East.
In the 19th century, the Port of Genoa underwent significant expansion under the Kingdom of Italy. Its geographical position and natural harbor made it a strategic point for commercial and military activities. Today, it continues to be a crucial port, serving as a major gateway for goods and passengers, and is considered one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean Sea.
You can explore the city individually, or take an optional trip to Pisa with a delegate (9:00-14:00).
Pisa is known worldwide for its Leaning Tower (Torre Pendente) and other Romanesque buildings in the local cathedral complex in Piazza dei Miracoli ("Square of Miracles"). Pisa was founded at the mouth of the Arno River, probably by the Greeks. According to Latin writers, it was founded in the 13th century BC, 550 years before the foundation of Rome. Temporarily belonging to the Etruscans, an Etruscan necropolis was documented in 1991 during archaeological excavations in the area of the Garibaldi Arena. In the time of ancient Rome, Pisa was one of the centres of power over the Mediterranean. In the Middle Ages, the de facto independent Republic of Pisa was an important trading port and one of the maritime republics.
The port of La Spezia, located in the Liguria region of Italy, has a rich and storied history that dates back to ancient times. The modern port traces its origins back to the 1800s, but the harbor has been in use for much longer. In fact, it was an important naval base for the Romans and was later utilized by the Genoese during the Middle Ages.
In the 1860s, under the direction of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy, the port was significantly developed and expanded, solidifying its role as a vital military and commercial hub. During World War II, the harbor was heavily bombed by the Allies, causing significant damage. However, La Spezia managed to recover and rebuild, and it remains an important port to this day, serving both commercial and military purposes.
In the early morning arrival in Civitavecchia. Civitavecchia [Civitavecchia] is an Italian port town in the province of Roma in the central Italian region of Lazio. It is located on the Tyrrhenian Sea, 80 km west-northwest of Rome. The area has been inhabited since the Etruscan period. Translated as Civitavecchia, literally Old Town, it is the prototype of a classical Italian settlement with roots in antiquity (it has been shown that the site was inhabited in Etruscan times), which has undergone a wealth of development and change over its more than a thousand years of existence, traces of which are still visible today. It was a major Roman port and today you can still visit over a hundred churches. Possibility of an independent optional excursion to Rome.
The history of the Italian port Civitavecchia dates back to the 2nd century during the reign of Emperor Trajan. The port was established as the port of Rome and was originally known as Centumcellae. Its strategic location and well-constructed harbor made it a critical asset to the Roman Empire, facilitating both military and commercial operations.
Over the centuries, the port of Civitavecchia has faced numerous invasions and destructions. It was destroyed by Barbarossa in 828 AD and then rebuilt by Pope Innocent XII in the late 17th century. Today, Civitavecchia serves as a major port for ferry connections to destinations like Sicily, Sardinia and other parts of the Mediterranean. It is also a popular departure point for Mediterranean cruises.
The Balearic Islands - paradise on earth. A stroll through the centre of Palma, especially in the evening, is an unforgettable experience. Walking past the Cathedral of Light, the old town hall, the Royal Palace or the olive tree over 2000 years old is truly magical. The finishing touch is, of course, a visit to the outdoor café in Plaza D Mayor, where you can enjoy a great authentic sangria. But be warned, make sure you get back to the ship on time. We recommend the MSC transfer.
The port of Palma de Mallorca, located on the southern coast of the island, has a rich history that spans several centuries. It was initially used by the Romans in 123 BC, serving as a strategic naval base during the conquest of the Balearic Islands. Over the centuries, it has been used by various civilizations including the Byzantines, Moors, and Christians, reflecting the island's tumultuous history.
In the 19th century, the port began to experience significant growth as it became a key hub for trade and transportation within the Mediterranean region. The modern port was established in 1872, and it underwent major expansions and improvements in the 20th century to accommodate larger vessels. Today, the Port of Palma de Mallorca is one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean, serving both commercial and tourist traffic.

Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, boasts a history that dates back over two millennia. Founded as a Roman colony called Barcino in the 1st century BCE, its early development is still visible in remnants such as Roman walls and structures in the Gothic Quarter. During the Middle Ages, Barcelona flourished as a major maritime power within the Crown of Aragon, becoming a vital center for trade and culture. The city's medieval landmarks, like the Barcelona Cathedral, reflect this period of growth and significance. However, political upheavals in later centuries, including the decline of Catalonia's independence, temporarily slowed its development.
The 19th century marked Barcelona’s cultural and architectural renaissance. The Catalan Renaissance and the Modernisme movement brought artists and architects like Antoni Gaudí, whose works, including Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló, transformed the city into a showcase of creativity. The 1992 Olympics further revitalized Barcelona, modernizing its infrastructure and boosting its global profile. Today, Barcelona is a thriving cultural, economic, and tourist hub, blending its rich history with modern urban life. Its iconic landmarks, Mediterranean coastline, and vibrant Catalan identity make it one of the world’s most beloved cities.

The port of Cannes, formally known as Vieux Port, has a rich history that dates back to the Roman era when it was primarily used for fishing and trading. In the 10th century, Cannes became an important stop for pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land, leading to the development of the port.
In the 19th century, Cannes underwent significant transformation into a luxury resort destination, attracting British aristocrats and Russian nobles. This led to the expansion of the port to accommodate yachts and pleasure crafts. Today, Vieux Port is known for hosting prestigious events like the Cannes Film Festival and the Cannes Yachting Festival.
