History

The history of Dubai, now a global metropolis and one of the United Arab Emirates’ most iconic cities, began as a small fishing and pearling village on the Arabian Gulf. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area was inhabited as far back as 3000 BCE, with early settlers relying on fishing, pearl diving, and trade. By the early 19th century, Dubai had developed into a modest trading hub under the leadership of the Al Maktoum family, who assumed control of the city in 1833. Its location along key trade routes made it a center for commerce, attracting merchants from Iran, India, and Africa.

In the 20th century, Dubai’s fortunes shifted with the decline of the pearling industry in the 1930s. However, the discovery of oil in 1966 marked the beginning of a transformative era. Under Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum’s leadership, oil revenues were invested in infrastructure, propelling Dubai into rapid modernization. Following the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, Dubai diversified its economy, focusing on trade, tourism, and real estate. Today, Dubai is renowned for its towering skyscrapers, including the Burj Khalifa, and its evolution from a humble fishing village to a global financial and cultural center epitomizes its remarkable history.
