History
The history of Marmaris dates back to antiquity, when it was known as Physkos and was part of the Kara civilization. The city's strategic location has made it an important port and trading centre since the time of Ancient Greece. Over the centuries, the city has passed through the hands of various civilizations, including the Romans, the Byzantines and finally the Ottomans, who gave it its current name.
An important milestone in the history of Marmaris was the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century.
