Before booking a cruise

On this page you will find the information you need to know before you book a cruise type holiday at sea. In our experience, some clients find it challenging to assess the demands of a cruise trip. A trip to the USA or Japan is not as challenging as a trip to Italy or flying to Mallorca. We encourage you to review this information before booking your cruise - it is not intended to discourage you from traveling, but to truthfully inform you of what to expect on your travels.

What is a cruise at sea?

We have been dealing with this issue since the very beginning of our cruise business. We try to explain to clients that a cruise is not so expensive that they cannot afford it, but also that you are not just sailing at sea, but above all you are experiencing new places, countries, cultures, religions. All this in a perfect setting, with great gastronomy and entertainment. If you believe these words and take a cruise with us, you will experience a truly different holiday... And with this slogan we have come to the market.

We have been operating in the tourism market for the second decade and we are convinced that we have enough experience to ensure you a pleasant holiday. We have had so much experience, ups and downs in our long history that we can provide you with relevant information and advice on cruises at sea. Every sentence, every word in our catalogue and website is backed up by a story, an event, the knowledge of our clients. Our clients' return rate on cruises is an incredible 86%. So, the bottom line is that you either get hooked on cruises and pass, or you never go on them again.

We want to be honest with you and that's why we have prepared this page to inform you not only about the beautiful things you can encounter on a cruise, but especially about the fact that some of the procedures, destinations, places you visit are different from our way of life and could spoil your holiday. Yes, we know it's like a car salesman informing you in advance that his car may be nice and have a good engine, but you won't put anything in the boot. Still, we value our clients so much that we want to bring this information, which we think is important, to your attention;

Friends, this information is not intended to discourage you from sailing, but on the contrary we want to inform you in advance of what you might encounter during your travels. All of this information, which we provide here and which you will receive in even greater detail in your Pre-Cruise Departure Instructions, is based on our many years of experience in cruising and avoiding mistakes and crises. We firmly believe that you will appreciate our intention.

Price of the cruise

A cruise at sea is really a completely different holiday. You will either love cruising or you will never go on a boat again. There is nothing in between. And we're really happy that our clients love coming back for cruises. Our travel agency started from absolutely nothing. Our first cruises were in cars, and our first buses were only partially occupied. The beginning was very difficult. But we believed in this way of spending holidays and above all we were clear about our business strategy: we don't want to sell cheap cruises. We want to sell cruises with the service of a travel agency so that the client really feels like he is on holiday.

Today we see that it was the right business policy. That's why you won't find very low-priced cruises with us - because every discount, every low price costs something. We think that it makes no sense to go on a cruise shorter than 5 days, because the ratio of the investment and the loss of time spent on travel will not bring the effect of a well spent holiday. Our tours with transport and delegate are therefore a minimum of 7 nights or more.

The price of the cruise is also decisive. If someone offers you a cruise for 7 nights for 6 000 CZK, common sense says not to buy. That money won't buy you a good holiday. We often meet clients who buy a cruise to the Caribbean for 20 000 CZK. Again, think common sense, just a plane ticket to the USA costs a similar amount, so you can't have a cruise for that. So when choosing a cruise, think about it or give us a call, we will be happy to share our experience with you.

We have published several catalogues, made several videos from cruises, we go to fairs, lectures. We often write articles, reports, etc., with a clear goal - to give you as much as possible an idea of what you can experience on a cruise. And that from the very departure from home to your return. In our offer you will find our personal cruise experiences accumulated over the last ten years. We hope that you will find this information helpful on your cruise with Riviera Tour. A cruise at sea will then be a truly incredible experience for you.

A cruise is not a hotel stay

But before you decide to go on a cruise at sea, it is important to remember a basic fact: you are not going on a hotel holiday or a sightseeing tour.

You're going on a cruise. And there are some pitfalls to consider:

The ship is a machine. You are staying on a ship and a ship is a machine. Therefore, it is possible that you may feel vibrations or the noise of machinery and engines in your cabin during your cruise. This fact, even if it occurs only to a minimal extent, must be accepted and you cannot request a replacement of your cabin or claim for changes, discounts, etc.

Weather is weather. Nobody can really control the weather and therefore it may happen that a ship cannot dock in one of the planned ports due to its adversity. The main influence on anchoring is the wind. The cruise company may change the originally planned time of berthing in a port due to weather or operational reasons. In such a case, the ship will continue its voyage. It may also happen that the cruise company knows in advance that bad weather will hit the area and the captain decides to change the course and programme of the voyage for safety reasons. Please note that in such a case there is no right to compensation, discount on the cruise price or any other claims arising from this situation.

Smoking on board. Fire is one of the biggest risks when sailing at sea. Therefore, smoking is only allowed in designated areas on a cruise. The smoking room for cigarettes and cigars is usually located on decks 6-7, and smoking is usually allowed in designated areas on the pool deck, in the aft bar or in designated areas. Please note that smoking is prohibited in cabins and balconies!

Cruise itinerary. Cruise itineraries are prepared by the cruise company up to 3 years in advance and our CK creates individual tours approximately two years before the planned sailing. During this time the political and especially security situation in the region may change. Please note that the cruise company and travel agency RIVIERA TOUR is entitled to make operational changes to the programme and services provided before and during the tour, if it is not possible to ensure that the originally agreed programme and services are maintained. In the case of tours to regions where the current security situation may require a modification of the itinerary or cruise, there is no breach of the tour contract if there is a deviation in the itinerary of the cruise not exceeding 50% of the originally planned itinerary. The customer acknowledges that any such deviation from the originally planned itinerary is made for his/her safety and is included in the tour programme. These provisions also apply to other services related to this situation.

Unforeseen situations. It should be remembered that cruising at sea is a specific product of travel. The customer is fully aware that he/she will visit several countries and continents during the cruise and situations may arise which are beyond the control of the travel agent. These include situations vis maior, changes in the security and health situation in the country, natural disasters, earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, infections, viral infections and coronaviruses. It may also happen that some countries may refuse to dock a ship for any reason or may declare a quarantine, etc. These situations are beyond the control of the tour operator and the customer is fully aware of these situations and risks. In such cases, the customer is not entitled to any discount on the tour price, refund or cancellation of the tour. This also applies to the purchase of partial services, such as excursions in destinations.

Always on time. The basic difference between a hotel holiday and a boat holiday is that the boat will never wait for you. This fact must always be taken into account. It is really necessary that you return to the ship on time as per the instructions of the shipping company. Please note that the itinerary sent in the check-in instructions and on the boarding pass is indicative only. Please pay close attention to the information given when disembarking the ship. Boarding is usually no later than 30 minutes before the ship leaves the port. If you miss boarding, the ship will not wait for you. If you miss boarding and the ship departs without you, you will not be entitled to any compensation. All costs associated with this situation will be charged to the late customer's account. Therefore, it is better to be an hour early than five minutes late.

What to watch out for

How to choose a cruise

Destinace

If you've never taken a cruise and are thinking of taking one, we definitely recommend starting with a cruise with transport and a delegate. Cruises are a really different kind of holiday and with your delegate it will all be relaxed without having to think about what and how, treatments and so on. Our delegates will take care of it all. If you're choosing a cruise for the first time, we recommend the Eastern or Western Mediterranean.Current offers can be found here. But be warned. If you're thinking about exotic destinations, pay strong attention to the destination information below.

Videos from cruises

If you want to see what it's like on MSC ships or what the procedures are like on the ships, check out our videos. Some of them are older, but for your basic understanding of the procedures and life on the ships, they are a good guide and an idea of what to expect on your cruise. You can find our sea cruise instructional video in English here.

Health restrictions

As mentioned above, a cruise at sea is not a hotel stay. All services are interdependent in time and in case of misjudgement, delays, etc., can have unpleasant consequences for the client. It is also necessary, since it is a cruise at sea, to observe certain rules and regulations for the safe conduct of the cruise.

Autor/ka fotografie: Marcus Aurelius: https://www.pexels.com/cs-cz/foto/osoba-zena-kancelar-bez-tvare-4064339/;

Older people and their health

It happens that some elderly passengers cannot realistically assess their health. Sailing at sea has its own specifics and medical fitness is a guarantee for your safe sailing. For these reasons, we require proof of seaworthiness for all persons of the class of 1944 and older. You should submit the certificate on the form to your district doctor and send it to the travel agency when signing the contract. The travel agency has the right to cancel the tour-cruise without a medical certificate.

Pregnant women

Pregnant women must always have a doctor's note before boarding the ship. The ship is not adequately equipped for the birth of a baby or to deal with complications during pregnancy. Women from 24 weeks of pregnancy onwards cannot be accepted on board. A pregnant woman should always consult her doctor before boarding the ship.

Clients with dialysis

Guests with dialysis can travel as regular clients, bringing on board all the medication and equipment they normally need for their condition. This service must always be requested separately from the tour operator. People with dialysis cannot participate in cruises with transport and delegate, only individual cruises with their own transport to the port.

Clients with special diets

Clients with food intolerances or allergies are asked to indicate this when booking the cruise via the Special Needs Form and to confirm their needs with the reception or restaurant manager after embarkation. If you make this request in advance, the on-board staff will be happy to assist you in selecting dishes that do not contain substances that may cause an allergic reaction. Clients with a gluten-free diet will appreciate that MSC Preziosa, MSC Splendida, MSC Fantasia, MSC Magnifica, MSC Musica, MSC Orchestra, MSC Poesia and MSC Divina are certified by the Italian Association (AIC) for the preparation and serving of gluten-free meals.

Wheelchair riders on cruises

MSC and its staff have always been attentive to the needs of guests and constantly strive to offer the best possible service that meets international accessibility standards. Guests with various disabilities can submit their special requirements to the company by filling out the appropriate form (Special Needs Form). This form will be provided by our agency upon request. It is important that these requirements are made at the time of booking so that they can be registered and prepared in advance. It is not possible to make them afterwards.

Handicapped cabins, especially equipped for guests with disabilities or limited mobility, are available on every ship. There are a limited number of these cabins on the ship. Handicapped cabins are larger and more spacious, provide more space for movement than regular cabins, and have extra facilities and amenities tailored for these guests. For cruises with transportation and delegate with air and/or bus transportation only upon request, provided the ability to board and disembark the bus and transfer independently at airports. Max 1 person per group.

Clients with reduced mobility

All decks, public areas and tenders (lifeboats) are designed to be as accessible as possible for guests with reduced mobility. For safety reasons, guests with disabilities may be asked to be accompanied by a caregiver (depending on the specific itinerary). Wheelchairs are also available on all ships, for guest use during embarkation and disembarkation or in case of emergency. Guests who require continuous use of a wheelchair are required to bring it and the necessary equipment. For cruises with transportation and delegate with air and/or bus transportation only upon request, provided the ability to board and disembark the bus and transfer independently at airports. Max 1 person per group.

Blind clients

For blind clients, 5* ships such as Preziosa, Divina, Splendida and Fantasia are equipped with Braille in public areas, elevators and at the entrance to cabins for better orientation. Guests with this disability may also be asked to be accompanied by a carer or guide dog for their safety. Blind clients cannot participate in a cruise with transportation and a delegate, only cruises with their own transportation.

Hearing impaired

Clients with hearing impairments must always travel with an escort or carer. Passengers with partial hearing impairment can also travel alone, but only if they request the installation of a TDD kit in their cabin. This kit is available in limited quantities on all ships - it includes a light and vibrating device, a text phone and an analogue alarm clock. For these clients, wireless amplifiers and lights are available in the theatre, public areas and elevators. Hearing impaired clients cannot participate in cruises with transportation and a delegate, only cruises with their own transportation.

Choosing a boat

In particular, clients who have been travelling with us for perhaps the tenth time no longer choose a cruise by destination, but by ship. The new MSC ships are truly incredible colossi, they are floating cities where you don't even have to get off for a whole week, to walk around and enjoy the ship is really "work" for a whole week. How to choose a ship in our opinion?

sh_aerial-(12).jpg

Třída lodi LIRICA*** (MSC Lirica, MSC Sinfonia, MSC Opera)

They are relatively small ships, the smallest at MSC Cruises. They're not as luxuriously equipped, but it's the real nautical cruise. In short, it's kind of a "retro" cruise, so to speak. What you will appreciate is the fact that the orientation is very simple, no gadgets and requirements for apps, bookings and the like. You don't walk much due to the size of the ship and there aren't that many people on the ship. What you will appreciate is the friendly and almost rrelaxed atmosphere on the boat.

Třída lodí MUSICA**** (MSC Musica, MSC Magnifica, MSC Orchestra, MSC Poesia)

Sort of a mid-range boat. Our delegates love it. Very nice boats, not too big, service on the boats is usually very good. And again, what you appreciate is the fact that the orientation is very simple, no gadgets and requirements for apps, reservations, etc. You don't walk much given the size of the boat and there aren't that many people on the boat. What you will appreciate again is the friendly and almost family atmosphere on the boat.

Třída lodí FANTASIA***** (MSC Fantasia, MSC Splendida, MSC Divina, MSC Preziosa)

Then we've got a higher level. Beautiful ships, amazing interiors, spacious. The ships offer a lot of other activities during the cruise and are such a top in the ranking of LIRICA  and MUSICA class ships.The ships are really bigger in terms of size , so here you have to count on more clients on board the ship, which affects the service at the bars during impact  events ( after the theater...) and during embarkation and disembarkation. No less, even on these ships the travel is very pleasant.

Třída lodí MERAVIGLIA***** (MSC Meraviglia, MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Euribia)

Then we're really somewhere else. We have approximately 6000 guests and above all we are entering a new dimension of cruise travel - experience tourism, which relies not only on visiting destinations, but also on enjoying the cruise itself. The ship offers you a large number of experiential restaurants, a chocolate shop, a circus and so on. However, these services are already at an extra cost. Therefore, we recommend that if you want to enjoy a cruise on such a ship, count on investing more ( experience restaurants from about 30-40€ per person, special performances, circuses from 15€ per person- usually 2-3 performances during the cruise). There is a lot of use of electronic reservation systems, in-app menus and drink menus etc on these ships. Despite the fact that RIVIERA TOUR has these things ready in print, these ships are mainly for younger generation clients with language skills, but they can also be managed with the assistance of our delegate. The disadvantage of these ships is the very small number of free bars to sit

Třída lodí SEASIDE***** (MSC Seaside, MSC Seaview, MSC Seashore, MSC Seascape)

designed specifically for warm weather. It offers plenty of open spaces from which to enjoy the sun over the sea, on holidays with transport and a delegate with Riviera Tour you can enjoy the sun over the sea. Guests can enjoy a variety of restaurants, bars and shops. The 360° promenade, which is even glassed in some places, is also a unique place. This area around the perimeter of the ship is set up as a recreational area where guests can stroll, eat, drink, shop and take in the spectacular views all around. MSC Seaside also offers several different lounges, including the exclusive MSC Yacht Club. Guests can also choose from a range of suites and family suites. By changing the design, including moving the engine room to the centre of the ship, the designers have achieved greater stability.MSC Seaside is thus easier for the crew to manoeuvre and almost sway-free when sailing, which Riviera Tour clients will appreciate. Electronic reservation systems, in-app menus and drink menus and the like are used extensively on these ships. Despite the fact that RIVIERA TOUR has prepared these matters in print, these ships are mainly intended for younger clients with language skills, but they can also be managed with the assistance of our delegate. From our point of view, the most beautiful ships are probably the MSC CRUISES

WORLD*****+ (MSC World Europa, MSC World America)

Future travel. At the moment of launch, it will become the largest ship in the world in terms of passengers. It will offer its visitors an unprecedented 22 decks, 2,626 cabins and more than 40,000 m² of public space and many unprecedented attractions. According to MSC Cruises, this "ultra-modern urban metropolis at sea" will push the boundaries of entertainment at sea and offer a new standard of cruise experience when it launches in early December 2022. And it's the first MSC ship to operate on reduced gas. The count of guests is about 7 000 clients, and above all, we are entering a class of ships of a new dimension of cruise travel-experience tourism, which relies not only on visiting destinations, but above all to enjoy the cruise itself. The ship offers you a large number of experiential restaurants, a chocolate shop, its own brewery, a skating area or a mega slide. However, these services are already at an extra cost. Therefore, we recommend that if you want to enjoy a cruise on such a ship, count on investing more ( experience restaurants from about 30-40€ per person, special shows, circuses from 15€ per person- usually 2-3 shows during the cruise). There is a lot of use of electronic reservation systems, in-app menus and drink menus etc on these ships. Despite the fact that RIVIERA TOUR has prepared these matters in print, these ships are mainly intended for younger clients with language skills, but they can also be managed with the assistance of our delegate. The disadvantage of these ships is the very small number of free bars to sit

Read what we write to you

We have lots of useful information for you. We sometimes have clients who complain about hotels in the USA, but have not read our information or departure instructions. Therefore, we think it is really important to pay attention to our instructions and information. It can make your holiday more enjoyable or maybe choose a completely different destination than you originally planned.

Insurance

A chapter in itself. For all cruises we offer travel insurance from Slavia a.s. insurance company, mainly because our insurance is tailored specifically for cruises. With most insurance companies, air rescue on the high seas is excluded from the terms of insurance or limited to, for example, 5 miles from land. Such insurance is then absolutely useless in an emergency. In an emergency where transport of a patient from ship to land by air must be arranged, insurance is always necessary. Otherwise the air ambulance will not take off. That's why our insurance is more expensive. If you have insurance for 200 CZK for a whole week or as our clients often appeal-"I am insured on a card" , then this is really a huge problem in case of emergency;

Medical procedures abroad are very expensive, especially in the USA. Just for example pneumonia in Madeira - about 500.000 CZK, rescue and treatment of heart attack - France - about 4.000.000 CZK, treatment of stroke St. Marten - Caribbean - 7.500.000 CZK. Therefore, we strongly point out the real necessity of taking out suitable travel insurance. If you are not insured through our travel agency, we will require proof of travel insurance before issuing a boarding pass. Travel insurance is a condition of being able to participate in the cruise. About insurance - click here

Delegate on a cruise

We have really experienced delegates on cruises. Do you have communication problems, can't communicate well in foreign languages, or don't have the courage to travel alone to a port? Our delegate is here for you. What to emphasize:

Destinace

Before you set sail, just one personal observation from our travels abroad. After visiting over a hundred countries, I can say from the bottom of my heart that I am grateful for where I was born and where I live. If anyone wants to have a truly wonderful vacation that is meant to leave beautiful memories in their heart, they need to realize, no matter what country they are going to, that not everywhere people live as well as they do here. You really need a bit of humility and respect for the country you are exploring, for the people who live a sometimes difficult life there. Not all services will be of good quality, not all hotels will be beautiful, not all customs, religions, governmental regimes will be to your liking. However, if you respect the country you are exploring with love and an open heart, it will come back to you at least in the form of beautiful memories, It is possible that you will fall like me literally mania to get to know new countries, new people, new traditions and for me new unknown beauties of this world.

karibik-2.jpg

ITALY - GREECE - SPAIN

Learn to perceive time a little differently. If you make an appointment for 10:00, expect it to start no earlier than 10:15. That's just the way it is. these countries have a slightly different perception of time and way of life than we do. Most of the time nobody is in a hurry and that's true in restaurants and bars. Be patient and if you are in a hurry, always use you smile and the word please. Never, ever raise your voice and don't argue- you won't get anywhere. However, the people are very nice, smiling and happy to help you. They are very fond of children and conversation. They are also literally masters of chaos  and incomprehensible arrangements that work quite well, no less. Also, count on these countries to keep you entertained late into the evening. They don't go out to dinner until around 10pm and usually everything stretches well past midnight. Want to go to bed early in the evening- don't go here, find another destination;

Don't frown on "bambini"
Children are a sacred and protected species here. So make nice, even if they dump a bucket of sand on your head or bang their plates next to you in a restaurant. It's a plus if you're travelling with your children or grandchildren. They can get away with anything in Italy.
Never go to church in shorts
Italians are gradually getting used to it, but try to avoid it anyway - you just don't go to church in short shorts.
Don't trust your navigation
The further south you go in Italy, the more often your navigation will start to fail. That is if, like us, you follow google maps. The kilometres to your destination don't quite add up, one-way streets in small towns lead the other way, google will send you to a no-go zone or private property when you're looking for a beautiful beach. Fortunately, even the journey is a destination.
Don't rush
Whether you're admiring Rome, Florence or Bolzano, don't rush. Ancient monuments aren't going anywhere, an Italian wouldn't either, and this beautiful country is worth it.

WARNING - supervision of children

In Italy, it is forbidden by lawto leave children under the age of 14 unsupervised; breaking this law carries a penalty of 6 months to 5 years' imprisonment; e.g. you cannot leave a child unsupervised to go down a ski slope, even if only for a short while.

Cesta busem:

DENMARK - NORWAY - SWEDEN

These destinations are all about nature. Don't expect extensive historical explanations from the delegate - they won't be. Enjoy the nature around you. Cruising the fjords is a never-ending cinema from the deck of the ship. There's always something to look at, even at night. Embarkation usually in Hamburg or Kiel, expect a longer embarkation and disembarkation than say Genoa. The Germans, despite their organisation, can be very unpleasant and indeed sometimes incomprehensible. Be patient. And beware of cruises in the north. Expect it to rain. So a raincoat, spare clothes and boots are a requirement for this cruise.

Allemannsrett - is a traditional Norwegian law, according to which anyone can move freely on uncultivated land (even on private land) and can also spend up to two days on it. You just have to follow a few rules, namely that you must not disturb other people, animals and must keep a minimum distance of 150m from the nearest inhabited building;

Don't give thanks for everything- In Norway, the phrase "Thank you for everything" (Takk for alt) is not used in common speech, as this phrase is reserved mainly for memorials, ribbons on funeral wreaths and obituaries. It is always better to give thanks specifically for a particular thing or service.

Don't be impatient - it is known that Norwegians are never in a hurry, as the Norwegian proverb is "Ting tar tid" (Good things take their time), so they stick to this proverb in all their activities.

Let me help you - Norwegians, with few exceptions, are not very forthcoming with strangers and generally do not interfere with other people's plans and activities, or those of their guests. So if your Norwegian host even hints that it's not a good idea to go fishing or take a bigger trip around the area, it's a good idea to follow that advice, because no one knows the fickle Norwegian weather as well as the locals do.

 Alcohol as payment- never  - in Norway where the stronger alcoholic drinks are very expensive, our people may be very tempted to use a bottle of hard liquor as payment or for barter. But this may not be the best idea, especially in southern and south-western Norway, where many people keep their distance from alcohol and so the offer of wine or schnapps is not very convenient.

 Tipping - should be no more than 10% of the total spend and should only be given at maximum satisfaction.

Cesta busem:

ARAB EMIRATES

Flight time approx. 6 hours non-stop. Every year a large number of people visit UAE especially Dubai. If you are planning to visit Dubai for any purpose, there are a few things you should know before you get here. People in Dubai are kind, hospitable and polite, it is a wonderful place to visit. Although it is an Islamic country, it follows a fairly tolerant policy. Visitors are expected to respect their cultural sensitivities. Certain factors need to be taken into consideration when it comes to dress code and behavior, and you are sure to have a great time. Respect the laws and values of the country and your stay will be extremely enjoyable. If you are not going to respect these values- do not go to ARAB EMIRATES  and find another destination.

WHAT TO WEAR

While you will see plenty of foreign women wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts in shopping malls and other public places, you shouldn't assume that this is acceptable to all locals. While as hosts they are often too polite to reproach female tourists, most locals take it as disrespect. Despite the relative liberalism of the UAE, you are in a country for which traditions are dear, and it is inconceivable for the locals to accept completely different values of behaviour.

It's rude to come from the beach in a swimsuit to a hotel
It always takes a bit of common sense, such as dressing up after leaving the beach or dressing decently in hotel dining rooms, on the streets or in nightclubs. Long sleeves and casual skirts below the knee or trousers are acceptable. No covering up is necessary. Generally speaking, appropriate clothing has its advantages. You will attract less attention, receive a warmer welcome and treatment from locals who can appreciate your willingness to respect their customs, and all will be well.

DUBAJ IS THE MOST TOLERANT
Cotton T-shirts and loose pants or skirts not only protect you from the rude stares of men, but also protect your skin from the sun. If you're travelling outside of Dubai, remember that social norms are much more conservative elsewhere in the UAE. Dubai is one of the safest destinations for women in the Middle East, but women in inappropriate clothing, especially in the evening, in nightclubs and bars risk being seen as prostitutes by locals. It may surprise you, but although prostitution doesn't officially exist here, it is quite common in the clubs, bars and streets of Deira and Bur Dubai. Mostly, however, women from Asia and also from the Balkans ply their trade.

A FEW GOOD TIPS FOR WOMEN
Despite reassurances from travel agents and Dubai authorities that women have nothing to worry about in the country, it's a good idea to follow a few basic rules to help ward off unwanted attention and make it easier for you as a woman to travel. Wear your wedding ring even if you're single. You're instantly an "unavailable" object for local men. However, you may be surprised by uncomfortable questions about how you could have left your husband or children alone. If you are travelling with a friend, refer to him or her in company as a spouse, not a boyfriend. Avoid direct eye contact with men, wear dark glasses. In a taxi, don't sit in the front seat. If you need help or advice, ask a woman first. To address a man first as a woman is a pretty gross transgression.

And here are some more do's and don'ts to keep in mind when visiting Dubai.

Clothing- Be modest in your dress, especially in conservative areas and public places. Swimwear is acceptable at private beaches and swimming areas. Swimwear should not be worn in any area other than the beach, water parks or swimming pools. Shorts and t-shirts are appropriate attire in many public places. When visiting mosques, older parts of the city and religious sites, it is advisable to cover shoulders, arms and legs. Women must cover their heads with a headscarf when entering a mosque. Crossdressing is not accepted and can get you detained by the authorities. Any form of nudity is strictly prohibited, including topless sunbathing. It is not appropriate for men to walk on the street or in shopping malls with their chests exposed.

Gestures - Never point a finger at anyone, it is considered offensive. If you want to gesticulate with your hand, use your whole hand to point in a direction.Obscene hand gestures in public can get you arrested. Avoid showing your feet or crossing your legs, especially in front of important guests.

Drinking - The country has a zero-tolerance policy for drunk driving. Getting drunk and behaving badly when one is drunk in public is unacceptable, it could result in a fine or worse. Consumption of alcohol and other illegal substances in public is prohibited. There are plenty of places in Dubai where one can indulge in drinking. Go to a bar or pub and you will be surprised at the variety of liquor that is served.

Photographing- Stay alert when taking photos. Always get UAE or UAE national permission before taking a picture of a resident, especially a woman.

Be mindful of your language - Explicit gestures, noise disturbance, vulgar language and expressions of disrespect for the Islamic religion or UAE leaders are prohibited. There could be legal implications for these actions.

Holy month of Ramadan - Muslims pray, fast and reflect during this month. One should follow the rules issued by the government during the month of fasting. Many people would advise you not to visit this country during Ramadan, follow the rules and even the time of Ramadan can be a pleasant stay.

The use or possession of drugs, cohabitation, sex outside marriage, having babies out of wedlock, adultery and homosexuality are considered illegal.

USA AND CARIBBEAN

A chapter in itself. Let's be honest with ourselves. A lot of clients have a dream-- the Caribbean. They look at photos, promotional materials, catalogs, movies. All of this is nice, but it's important to remember that life across the pond is completely different from ours, and below we'll try to explain some of the pitfalls that can affect your vacation choice. First of all, it is important to remember that you are not flying to Egypt for your holiday, but to the other side of the globe and crossing the time zone with a difference of 6 hours.

HEALTH STATUS

Evaluate your medical condition correctly. Below you will find important information about your flight and local customs that may affect your health or you may assess that you are better off travelling to another destination due to your health condition.

AIR TRANSPORT TO THE USA

First of all, it is important to remember that you are not flying to Egypt or Madeira.You are flying halfway around the world and air travel is the most challenging process of your entire vacation;

The flight to the USA is always a connecting flight. For an additional fee, we can arrange a direct flight from Vienna without the assistance of a delegate. As standard, you must be ready to check in at the airport at least 3 hours before departure. Departures are from Prague or Vienna with a change in Paris or London. Flight time approx. 2 hours. Transfer time minimum 3.5-4 hours, sometimes more. This connection time is very important because planes in Europe are delayed and if we miss our connection to the USA , your holiday is over! Therefore this time interval is very important. Another aspect is the transfer at the airport. There are long lines at passport control and it can take up to 2.5 hours to change from gate to gate.

The flight to the USA usually takes about 9-11 hours depending on the route. Everything is in economy class and it should be pointed out in advance that the travel agency has no control over the location of the clients on the plane. The placement on the plane is done by the airport staff at check-in.  It is quite a big problem especially for families with children!!! Guaranteed seats, door seats or upgrades can be arranged at an additional cost and this request must be made when signing the travel contract - this is not possible afterwards. In-flight refreshments including meals will be provided. Please be advised of possible health complications ( sitting in one seat for 11 hours). Ideally, you should simply sleep through the flight.

Again, the return flight is handled similarly, with the caveat that we have to be at the airport at least 4 hours before our departure from MIAMI. In the US, several flights are handled under the airline, and that means checking in a thousand people at the counter. Again, if we missed check-in and didn't get to the gate on time, the plane would fly away with no refund. That's why getting to the airport on time is extremely important.

Please also note that the size and especially the weight of the luggage must be strictly observed. If you exceed the weight of your baggage by even half a kg, you will be charged a fee, which can be as high as 100-150 USD.

Conditions of air carriage

Clients are strongly advised that flying outside the EU will significantly change the flight conditions and airline powers. Airlines quite often change their pre-announced flight offers and in the vast majority of cases the passenger has no choice but to accept these conditions. Complaining about these changes is usually unsuccessful. The travel agency has no control over these changes and is not responsible for them. In any case, if such a situation arises, we will do our best to help you resolve the situation.

Attention - sufficient time is needed to transfer to long-haul flights, so we recommend a minimum transfer time at airports

 IMMIGRATION CHECK

Currently, you can travel to the US with or without a visa under the ESTA visa waiver programme. The first option is "Visa to the USA" and the second option is "ESTA - Visa Waiver" both options have their pros and cons, consider carefully which option you choose. Visas to the US are valid for up to 10 years and you can travel repeatedly. The visa-free registration of US visa is valid for two years from the date of approval and during this period you can travel to the US repeatedly. We can help you secure an Esta at your request for an additional fee.

Upon arrival in the USA, you will be required to go through immigration upon deplaning. At the immigration check, you must provide both left and right hand prints and the immigration officer may ask you a few questions about entering the US. We have prepared possible immigration questions and answers in a separate appendix to the check-in instructions. A delegate will accompany you to the immigration procedure. However, the delegate must not interfere with or be present during the immigration process. It is possible that the immigration process may take a considerable amount of time. We are usually cleared within approximately 2 hours, but we have experienced situations where we have had to wait considerably longer.  We ask for your utmost patience. Neither the delegate nor the tour operator has any control over these procedures. You will also need to wait for the transfer to arrive after check-in, which is affected by the current traffic situation. Thank you for your understanding.

Very important notice

A citizen of the Czech Republic however, cannot travel to the US under ESTA approval if he/she has visited DPRK, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Sudan at any time after March 1, 2011. Similarly, he or she cannot use ESTA approval to travel to the U.S. if he or she has visited Cuba after January 12, 2021.In these cases, it is necessary to apply to the U.S. Embassy well in advance for the appropriate visa (e.g., a category B1 business visa or a category B2 tourist visa). Travelers who, in addition to Czech citizenship, also hold citizenship of Cuba, DPRK, Iraq, Iran, Sudan and Syria must apply for a visa.

TRANSFERS IN MIAMI

Miami is huge, but small at the same time. What we mean by that is that 7 cruise ships can dock in Miami in one day, which is about 30-35.000 clients. These people have to be accommodated somewhere and, above all, transported. That's why the prices for hotels in Miami are astronomical by our standards and the same goes for transfers and their prices and especially availability. The word "trafic" is probably the most overused just for transportation. The whole problem is related to immigration, both at the airport and when disembarking the ship, where again immigration takes place when disembarking at the end of the cruise. Since you can't estimate the time of the group checking in at immigration, you can't even estimate the transfer time. It is quite common for transfers to miss the scheduled time  and have to be rebooked and therefore re-booked and paid for.

Therefore, please be aware that transfers can sometimes be delayed by more than 30 minutes and we will simply have to wait for them - that's just the way it is in Miami. We ask for your utmost patience. There is really nothing we can do about this situation. If you don't want to wait, we can arrange a private shuttle service from the airport to the hotel for an additional $50 per person, as well as from the hotel to the port for an additional $30 per person and from the port to the airport for an additional $40 per person;

TAXI

If you want to book a taxi, always allow plenty of time, especially on the way to the airport or from Dolphin Mall to the airport. You can really be delayed for more than an hour. Also expect that the taxi will not arrive at the time you booked, but with a considerable delay.

HOTELS IN THE USA

That's the stumbling block. From Europe, we are literally spoiled by the standards of our hotels. US travelers will tell me that you have to cut a lot, a lot, from your standards. Our advice is- check off 2-3 stars or so for your hotel. Accommodation in Miami is very complicated and expensive. Our travel agent takes advantage of the location of the hotel in particular. For our clients we use the services of the SOUTH BEACH PLAZA HOTEL, about 100 from Miami Beach. This hotel is particularly convenient for its location. What makes hotels in the USA different and what might surprise you:

air conditioning - air conditioning everywhere and everything at "refrigerator temperature -cca 20 st" We recommend to turn off the air conditioning in the room

closed windows - most hotels in Miami of this level have this. In short, windows are closed, and if they can be opened, it is at most about 10 cm. No more than that. For those who don't understand, it's for security reasons. Closed windows combined with air conditioning is not a good combination for us. We only sleep in the rooms due to the varied program, the bathrooms are mostly with a bathtub, the bed sheets are clean. If you are interested in a  better hotel, we can arrange a hotel of your choice for an extra charge. However, please note that transfer departures are always from SOUTH BEACH PLAZA HOTEL;

Breakfast - forget the breakfast buffet. Many hotels in the US don't offer breakfast at all. The kind of regular breakfast you get at our hotel is coffee - drip, bagel, butter, muffin, jam, apple or orange. That's all.

deposits at hotels- at hotels you pay by credit card deposit, if you travel with transport and delegate, you do not have to worry about anything, everything will be solved by the delegate;

FOOD

Opposite the hotel is a shop where you can buy food, drinks, beverages, drugstore and is open 24 hours a day. Alcoholic drinks must be accompanied by a passport and can be purchased between 08:00 and 20:00. Eating out on the street will set you back about $6-15 per person per meal, restaurants about $30-80 per person. It is a big problem if you have allergies. American stores and products are built for shelf life and "e's" are everywhere and in everything. Beware ! It is forbidden to bring food, fruit, etc. into the US. Not only will they confiscate it, but fines can be as high as $300.

MONEY

It is very difficult to pay with a Stodollar Card and many shops and restaurants will not accept them at all. Also, as far as cards are concerned, 90% of them accept only credit cards. Be warned - we have a completely different idea of a credit card- a credit card is one where you have a loan with the bank and you can go into the negative on the card !!!

TIPS

Everywhere in the US and the Caribbean, TIPS is paid. In short, it's their culture and should be respected. And if you don't want to accept their culture, you'd better not go to the US and the Caribbean. As a rule drivers are given 1$ for transfers , guides 1-2$, in restaurants 10% of the price, also taxi drivers 10%, at the hotel and so on. That's just the way it is. During your cruise you will need about $5-10 per person for TIPS. Don't TIPS- you'll unnecessarily get yourself into trouble.

AIR CONDITIONING

So really watch out for that. You're going to the Caribbean, you're going for warmth. And in America, everything is acclimatized. Our bodies really aren't used to it. Shops, restaurants, taxis, buses, airports, planes - everything is air-conditioned to an unbelievable 20 degrees. If you walk out of a hot street where it's over 30 degrees into a chilled shop and do it like that several times in a row you're in for a nice, at best, cold, mostly sitting on your vocal cords. That's why we recommend a light sweater and a hat or scarf for the plane or bus.The air conditioning on planes and buses blows all the time. At hotels we recommend turning off the air conditioning;

OUR GOOD ADVICE

Don't forget to fill out the ESTA Travel Registration
You don't necessarily need to apply for a visa before you travel to the US - if your stay is no longer than 90 days and you are travelling for business or pleasure, just fill out and pay for the ESTA Travel Registration. An approved ESTA in no way guarantees permission to enter the US, but it does authorise you to travel to the US. Officially, it is recommended to fill it out at least 72 hours before departure, although the evaluation will occur within minutes. If you leave for the airport without a completed ESTA, you will most likely not be allowed on the plane.

Make copies of all reservations

Always keep several copies of your airline tickets, travel tickets, hotel reservations, travel documents and insurance contracts. It is best if each traveller has one copy of all documents, including, for example, the travel insurance of another traveller.

Are you afraid of an immigration interview because of your English? Prepare ahead!

When you land at your first airport in the US, you must have a mandatory interview with an immigration officer. He will decide whether to let you into the country or send you back home on the next plane (very unlikely).You can usually go through the immigration interview in a group with your fellow passengers. If you are still worried about your English, have the answers to each question written down on a piece of paper and present it to the officer.

Check your credit card
If you haven't used your credit card abroad before, check with your bank that you can pay with it abroad. As unbelievable as it sounds these days, I know of a case where a Czech savings bank's credit card didn't work in the U.S.Don't be fooled by the name credit card when paying, the vast majority of purchases in America are made on credit cards. In the Czech Republic, on the other hand, you mostly use debit cards, where you spend your own money. Still, when paying in the US, state that you are paying with a credit card to avoid any complications or inability to pay. For more information, see our article on how to pay by credit card in the USA.

Be sure to activate roaming
Be sure to check that you have activated roaming to the US before you leave - without it, your phone won't log into the network, so you won't get a signal and you won't be able to get through. Some mobile operators differentiate between roaming inside and outside the European Union, so beware. Beware, you have roaming activated - but not data, you have to activate it!!!

Get ready for the time shift
The United States of America is divided into six time zones, with 6 hours less from east to west in the US compared to the Czech Republic. Hand-in-hand with the time shift goes jet lag, also known as jet lag. Your body is used to a different time, so you'll tend to fall asleep in the afternoon for the first few days after arriving in the States and wake up in the middle of the night. Experts say that for every hour of time difference, the body needs one day to adapt.

Don't underestimate travel insurance

The cost of healthcare in the US is extremely high, which is reflected in the cost of insurance to the US. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, I recommend taking out travel insurance with sufficiently high limits before departure. To give you an idea - treatment of acute appendicitis in the United States of America costs 600,000 CZK, the average cost of treatment for an insured tourist in the USA is 230,000 CZK!

Will you be driving? Apply for an international driver's license and read the rules of the road
Rental car is a must when travelling in the US (except perhaps in New York). If you intend to drive in America, be sure to get an international driver's license, which is usually required by rental companies. I recommend comparing offers from several companies before renting a car, you are more likely to save money. Drivers should read the article on driving in the US, there are a few differences in practice. In the US, cars with automatic transmissions predominate and the traffic lights are after the intersection, at which you can turn right on red. Just give way to a vehicle coming from the left, if necessary. Make sure you know the speed limit so you don't get a ticket. Also, to be on the safe side, read the instructions on how to fill up at a US gas station. The procedure is quite different from the Czech one.

Prepare your supply of single-dollar bills

The United States of America is the land of tipping. Restaurant servers, hotel maids and airport shuttle drivers are paid so that tips count. Restaurants (not fast food) expect a tip of 15-20%, taxi drivers expect around 10%, and maids and porters settle for a dollar or two. I recommend making a supply of these. In some restaurants, tipping is already part of the final price. Just look for the "Service Charge" box filled in.

Check your baggage allowance early

Check the maximum baggage allowance before each flight to or within the USA. For most airlines, only 1 piece of checked baggage weighing 20-23 kg is included in the ticket price. When flying to the USA, I recommend you have a reserve - expect to pack a lot of souvenirs, gifts or cheaply bought clothes on the way back, and expect your clothes to be wet after your Caribbean cruise.

Don't lock your suitcase, use the cable clamp
The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has the right to open your suitcase at the airport and inspect its contents. This is not an exception, but a common practice - the chances of being picked at random are quite high. In addition, security staff have the right to forcibly remove the lock, and you will only find out about the check from the leaflet when you pick up and open your suitcase at your destination airport. There are two ways to avoid buying new locks - either get a "TSA approved" lock or use cable clips to remove the zippers. One costs about a crown, and if you add another to your suitcase, they'll pull it off again after any inspection.

Pack an adapter into your outlet
In America, the standard is a 110-volt Type A or B outlet - that's the one with two flat pins. Be sure to buy or borrow an adapter and pack it in your trunk. They tend to be very expensive at airports. You can buy reducers for American sockets in most electrical stores, the cheapest sets can be bought for as little as 180 CZK.

Buy a power bank and carry it with you

Powerbank is a very useful thing, it is a kind of backup power source that you charge with a classic USB charger and then you can charge any phone or tablet. Depending on the capacity of the powerbank, you can charge your phone about once to five times. If you use your phone for photography or navigation, the battery drains quickly and the powerbank is a lifesaver.

Leave the sausage and schnitzel at home
Customs regulations prohibit the import of most meat and dairy products, including salami, sausages or the popular Czech schnitzel. You will still have to fill out a customs declaration on your flight to the US to indicate whether you are importing any of the banned foods. If you fill in yes, or if you are detected during a random check, the food in question will be confiscated. For a detailed list of permitted and prohibited items, see What foods can be imported into the US.

The cheapest food you can buy at fast food restaurants
Americans are very, very fond of eating at fast food restaurants, there are endless chains and I bet you've never heard of many of them. Subway, McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Jack in the Box, KFC, Taco Bell, Starbucks, Applebee's, Domino's Pizza, White Castle, Hooters, Krispy Kreme, Dunkin' Donuts, In-N-Out Burger, El Pollo Loco, Pizza Hut... just to name a few.Most of them sell burgers with fries in various shapes, and you'll pay $6-$10 for a menu. If you prefer a healthier lifestyle, I recommend Subway with fresh bagels of your choice. The menu usually includes a calorie count and amount of fat, part of the fight against obesity. All fast food restaurants offer a free refill of a post-mix drink, which in America is called a fountain. In addition to sugary drinks, there is usually a limited range of unsweetened drinks, usually tea or water. If you want to try something typically American, fill up on A&W Root Beer, an herbal lemonade with a hard-to-describe taste.

Price tag amounts are tax-free
In states where it is collected, sales tax is not part of the amount shown on the price tag. So an advertised $10 for a real American ground meat bun can turn out to be less than $12. When converting to crowns, keep this distinction in mind.

Alcohol is served in America from the age of 21

Alcoholic beverages are allowed in the US up to the age of 21, and under 21s cannot buy, import or possess alcohol. Unlike in the Czech Republic, this rule is quite strictly enforced in America, although there are of course cases where even minors drink. The vast majority of American states prohibit drinking in public or carrying and possessing open bottles of alcohol. Paradoxically, you can get around this law by, for example, hiding a beer bottle in a paper bag and drinking from it.

And finally:

DON'T TAKE PHOTOS OF POLICE OFFICERS, MILITARY VEHICLES, MILITARY AIRCRAFT

NEVER TAKE PICTURES AT THE IMMIGRATION CHECK!!!

NEVER PHONE AT THE IMMIGRATION CHECK!!!

NEVER DRINK ALCOHOL IN PUBLIC

DRESS APPROPRIATELY IN PUBLIC !

NEVER RESIST TO POLICE

ALWAYS WATCH YOUR OWN PERSONAL THINGS

ALWAYS PUT YOUR PASSPORTS AND MONEY IN THE HOTEL IN THE SAFE

ALWAYS KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR CREDIT CARD

ALWAYS LISTEN IN AN ORGANISED WAY TO INSTRUCTIONS FROM "IMPORTANT" PEOPLE AIRPORT, IMMIGRATION, FLIGHT OFFICERS
