The Port of Seattle, located in Washington, was created by the voters of King County in 1911, and was the first port in the United States to be established by a local government. It was formed in response to public outcry against corruption and mismanagement by private dock owners, with the aim of ensuring that the harbor would serve the public good, rather than private interests.
After its establishment, the Port of Seattle grew steadily, and by mid-20th century it had become one of the busiest ports in the United States. In 1969, it opened the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, further bolstering its importance as a transport hub. Today, the port continues to play a vital role in Seattle's economy, handling both passenger and freight traffic from around the world.
"Salmon Capital of the World". Alaska's best fishing town offers excellent opportunities to catch and eat wild salmon and observe the large population of bald eagles. Historic Creek Street is lined with an eclectic mix of shops featuring a variety of local artists and artisans. Nestled in tall rainforest and surrounded by breathtaking fjords, this charming town also boasts a rich maritime history and a vibrant Alaska Native culture. It is also known for its impressive displays of authentic 19th century totem poles.
The port of Ketchikan, located in Alaska, has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. It was initially established as a salmon canning site and later, a supply base for gold mining. With the growth of the gold mining industry, the port rapidly developed to facilitate the transportation of goods and people, making it a significant player in Alaska's economic development.
During the 20th century, the port of Ketchikan evolved into a crucial hub for the region's timber industry. In the 1950s, the port underwent major renovations to accommodate large timber shipments, significantly boosting Ketchikan's economy. The port also played a significant role in World War II as a strategic military supply base. Today, it serves as a popular tourist destination, particularly for cruise ships highlighting Alaska's rich natural beauty and historical significance.
Experience the wild beauty of Alaska. This coastal town, owned by the Huna Tlingit Native Corporation, offers breathtaking scenery and a deep connection to nature. But not only that: did you know that the world's largest zip line is located here? Icy Strai Point is also ideal for those looking for pure adrenaline, whether on an off-road ride through Chichagof Island's countryside or a cable car ride to the top of Sky Peak with its famous outdoor safari. There's definitely something to look forward to at Icy Strait Point!
Icy Strait Point, located in Hoonah, Alaska, has a rich history deeply rooted in the native Tlingit culture. It was originally used by the native people for fishing and hunting. It wasn't until the early 20th century that it was developed into a saltery, and later, a cannery by the Hoonah Packing Company.
In 2004, the Huna Totem Corporation, an Alaska Native-owned corporation, purchased the cannery and transformed it into a tourist destination. The original cannery buildings were preserved by the corporation, providing a unique insight into the region's industrial history. Today, Icy Strait Point is a popular stop for cruise ships, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich Tlingit heritage and Alaska's natural beauty.
In the morning we arrive at the world famous Tracy Arm Glacier Fjord, which is as amazing as our destination at the end of it. As you enter the narrow fjord, you can admire the cliffs rising 3,000 metres on either side of the narrow and winding channel. The excitement builds as the boat passes waterfalls, roaming bears and a local seal colony. After 27 miles, the intense blue of the Sawyer Glaciers looming above the water's surface will come into view around the final bend. After a brief stop on the water, we continue north to the nearby port of Juneau.
The Tracy Arm is not a port in the traditional sense, but a fjord located in Alaska. It is named after a Secretary of Navy Benjamin Franklin Tracy. It is situated about 45 miles (72 km) south of Juneau and is part of the Tongass National Forest.
While it doesn't have a specific date of establishment, Tracy Arm has been a significant location for cruise tourism in Alaska for several years. The fjord is over 30 miles (48 km) long and boasts breathtaking views of waterfalls and icebergs, making it a favorite among tourists. The area is also home to a variety of wildlife, including seals, whales, and birds, contributing to its popularity.
The Alaska state capital is only accessible by air or sea, making a cruise the ideal way to experience Juneau's snow-capped mountains, historic sites and breathtaking views. The city was founded during the gold rush of the 1880s and still invites visitors to experience gold panning. Right at the cruise port is the Goldbelt Tram, which climbs 1,800 feet to the top of Mount Roberts and offers perfect views of the Chilkat Mountains, Douglas Island, Gastineau Channel and more.
The port of Juneau, Alaska's capital, has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. Its establishment was closely linked to the gold rush era, when it served as a significant point for the shipment of gold. Over the years, the port has become a crucial hub for transportation, commerce, and tourism in Alaska.
In the 20th century, the Juneau harbor expanded significantly with the growth of the fishing and tourism industries. Today, it is a popular destination for cruise ships, with over a million tourists visiting annually. Despite the modernization, the port still reflects its historical roots, serving as a symbol of Juneau's rich past.
A short evening stop in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy whales, porpoises, sea lions, seals and birds before arriving at the harbour. Foodies will find an almost endless selection of food and delicacies in a place with the largest concentration of restaurants in all of Canada.
The Port of Victoria, located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island in Canada, holds a significant place in the history of maritime trade in North America. It was established in the mid-19th century during the Fraser River Gold Rush, becoming a crucial gateway for prospectors and settlers.
Over the years, the Port of Victoria has served various roles. During the two World Wars, it was used as a naval base and shipbuilding site. In the post-war years, it became an important center for commercial fishing, forestry, and tourism. Today, it is a bustling hub of activity, welcoming international cruise ships, and supporting a vibrant local economy.
