Roatán is the largest island of the Honduran archipelago Islas de la Bahía and lies less than 50 km off the coast of Honduras. The island is hidden behind the huge mountains of mainland Honduras, rising from the sea to a height of 2,400 metres. It is this location that makes Roatán an island very vulnerable to natural disasters. About 15% of Roatán is built-up, the rest is tropical forest. The coastline is sandy, with beautiful beaches with turquoise blue water.
The Isla de Roatan in Honduras has a rich history, dating back to the time of the Mayan civilization. The island was an important trading center for the Mayans, who left behind pottery and other artifacts that have been discovered by archaeologists. In the 16th century, it was frequently visited by European explorers, including Christopher Columbus, who claimed it for Spain.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the port of Roatan became a haven for pirates and privateers, who used the island as a base for their raids on Spanish galleons. The island was also a major center for the African slave trade. After the decline of piracy, the island became a British colony, before eventually becoming part of Honduras. Today, the port of Roatan is a popular destination for cruise ships and tourists who are attracted by its beautiful beaches and clear waters.
Mexico definitely has something to offer anyone looking for the perfect holiday. And although it has several major and minor resorts, what the country is really famous for is the Costa Maya. Another interesting thing about Mexico is what this country is actually famous for in the first place. Many people most often talk about its colonial past, but that's certainly not the main thing. As such, we always associate Mexico with our favourite drink, which is tequila. However, the current face of Mexico is also interesting, contrasting the large wealthy cities with the many shanty towns that are on the outskirts of such cities.
The Port of Costa Maya, located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, is one of the most important cruise ship destinations in the Caribbean. It was conceived and developed by the Mexican government in the late 1990s as a way to bring tourism to the less-developed southern regions of the state. The port officially opened in 2001 and quickly became a popular stop for cruise lines.
However, in 2007, the Port of Costa Maya was severely damaged by Hurricane Dean, a category 5 storm. The port was forced to close for an extensive period for repair and reconstruction. Despite this setback, it was successfully rebuilt and reopened a year later, in 2008. Since its reopening, the port has continued to thrive and develop, attracting a large number of tourists with its pristine beaches, Mayan ruins, and vibrant local culture.
Cozumel translates to the Island of Swallows. At first glance, you will be struck by the specific nature of its natural beauty. It is definitely worth seeing the Mesoamerican coral reef, which is especially popular among tourists for its swimming and diving opportunities. Those interested in swimming can take a ferry to the mainland to one of the most famous beaches, Playa Del Carmen.
The history of the port of Cozumel in Mexico dates back to the Pre-Columbian era. It was originally a sacred Mayan pilgrimage site, dedicated to the goddess Ix Chel. The Mayans believed that the waters surrounding the island had healing properties. The island was a major trade route and hub for maritime commerce in the Mayan civilization.
Over time, the port of Cozumel gained international recognition. It became a strategic location during the Spanish conquest, with the infamous Conquistador Hernán Cortés using it as a base for expeditions. During the 17th century, it was frequented by pirates. Today, it stands as one of the busiest cruise ship ports in the world, attracting tourists with its rich history and natural beauty.
In the Bahamian capital of Nassau, Bahamian Prime Minister Perry Christie and MSC Cruises Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago signed a 100-year contract in 2015 that allows MSC Cruises to occupy and operate an island called Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. The island offers a totally authentic vacation experience with the world's best beaches in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. The island has bicycle and other transportation rentals, dedicated beaches such as a family beach with a restaurant, playground and other amenities for children. A charming inland lagoon or a large formal gazebo for parties and weddings.
The history of port Ocean Cay in MSC Marine Reserve is a tale of transformation. Once a sand extraction site, Ocean Cay has been transformed into a marine reserve and private island destination for MSC Cruises. The project, which began in 2015, involved not only cleaning the industrial wasteland but also undertaking a massive marine restoration effort.
Through the efforts of MSC, this 95-acre island in the Bahamas now boasts a flourishing ecosystem. The port of Ocean Cay is unique as it is one of the first ports in the world to be built purely for cruise ship passengers. The transformation of Ocean Cay is an excellent example of how human intervention can positively impact the environment, converting a former industrial site into a thriving marine reserve.

Established by Christopher Columbus in 1496, the port of Puerto Plata holds a significant place in the history of the Dominican Republic. This harbor was the first European settlement in the Americas, and it played a crucial role in the Spanish colonization of the continent.
Despite being abandoned in the mid-16th century due to economic decline, the port of Puerto Plata reemerged as an important economic center in the 19th century. Sugar cane production and the growth of the tobacco industry led to the revival of the port, and it has since remained one of the most active and economically significant ports in the Dominican Republic.
A city that ranks as one of the oldest settlements founded by Europeans in the Americas. Juan Ponce de León was appointed the first governor of Puerto Rico in 1508, the same year he founded the first settlement of Caparra. A year later, some of the Spanish colonizers relocated to a new site closer to the sea - the current historic core of San Juan, located on a 7.8 km² island separated from the main island by a channel about 100 m wide. This relocation from Caparra to a nearby smaller island ended in 1521, when the new settlement was named 'San Juan Bautista' in honour of John the Baptist. The town was thus officially founded 28 years after the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. And we will have the incredible opportunity to discover these beautiful places because, just for the record, in 1983 a group of historic buildings in San Juan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Oh, and Ricky Martin was born here. And for the record, the City of San Juan is one of the vertices of the Bermuda Triangle, an area known in popular culture for the frequent and unexplained disappearances of ships and planes.
The San Juan port in Puerto Rico, also known as the Port of the Americas, has a rich history dating back to the 16th century. It was established by Spanish colonists who recognized its strategic importance for trade and defense. Over the centuries, the port expanded and became a crucial hub for the Spanish Empire's naval and trade activities in the New World.
In the 19th century, the port began to modernize with the development of railroads and industrialization. After Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory in 1898, the port's importance grew further. Today, the Port of San Juan is not only one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean but also one of the most important in terms of cruise ship traffic globally.

My name is Kateřina and I have been working at the Riviera since 2019. Thanks to this job I have visited many beautiful places and met a lot of great people. I love travelling, good food and going to concerts. My favourite ships to go on are the smaller ones that have a friendlier atmosphere, some of my favourites are MSC Sinfonia and MSC Lirica.
