The Port of Genoa has a rich history that traces back to the Roman times, when it was established as a trade hub. However, its status of one of Europe's leading seaports was achieved in the Middle Ages, under the Genoese Republic. This bustling port city was a major player in the maritime trade routes, particularly with the East.
In the 19th century, the Port of Genoa underwent significant expansion under the Kingdom of Italy. Its geographical position and natural harbor made it a strategic point for commercial and military activities. Today, it continues to be a crucial port, serving as a major gateway for goods and passengers, and is considered one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean Sea.
In Marseille, from the old harbour, we head to the local cathedral, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the island of Iff, which you can optionally visit. The island where the hero of Alexandre Dumas' novel, Count of Monte Cristo, was imprisoned. However, the hike to the Cathedral of Our Lady with our delegate is an unforgettable experience. Marseille is in the palm of your hand. You will see the locations where the movie TAXI was filmed, the old port with its forts and other attractions.
We recommend the MSC Cruises transfer from the port to the city, it is really necessary in this destination, price approx. 17€.
The port of Marseille, also known as the Old Port, is located in the heart of Marseille, France. Its history dates back to antiquity, around 600 BC, when it was founded by Greek mariners from Phocaea. Over the centuries, the port has played a significant role in the economic and cultural development of the region, serving as a major hub for trade and transportation.
In the Middle Ages, the port became an important center for the Mediterranean trade. Despite periods of decline, it continued to flourish, especially during the Renaissance when it was modernized and fortified. In the 19th century, the port underwent a massive expansion, solidifying its status as one of the world's leading maritime ports. Today, it remains a vital part of Marseille's identity and economy.
The extraordinary Spanish city of Tarragona hides an incredible cultural wealth. Arguably the most Roman monuments outside of Italy, you can even find them in a bank building or an underground garage. Quite deservedly, the city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. In the ancient Roman era, Tarragona, as the Latin fortified Tarraco, was the centre of the province of Hispania Tarraconensis. After the fall of Rome, it was conquered by the Visigoths and later by the Arabs, and first came under Spanish rule in 1117. During the Spanish War of Independence in the early 19th century, it twice suffered extensive sieges. The main sights of Tarragona are the Roman amphitheatre, the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, the remains of the Roman city wall and the modernist market building El Mercat Central.
The history of the Port of Tarragona in Spain dates back to the Roman Empire when it served as one of the most important maritime ports. It was originally known as Tarraco, and was the capital of the Roman province of Hispania Tarraconensis. The port played a vital role in the trade and transportation of goods, such as wine and olive oil, across the Roman Empire.
In the Middle Ages, the port continued to thrive, becoming a key hub for Mediterranean trade. The Port of Tarragona underwent significant expansion in the 19th century to accommodate growing trade demands. Today, it remains one of Spain's largest and busiest ports, handling a wide range of cargo including bulk goods, containers, and passenger services. The Port of Tarragona continues to be a significant contributor to the region's economy.
In the morning, after breakfast, you can set off with our delegate to explore this interesting city. We will admire the interesting architecture and urban design of the dried riverbed of the Turia River, which today houses a park and world-famous museums with amazing architecture by architect Santiago Calatrava. We walk through sleepy streets to the cathedral, where the Holy Grail-the chalice from which Jesus was to drink at the Last Supper-is housed. Afterwards, we'll do some shopping, sample some great ice cream or visit the local market. If you are interested, you can visit the local oceanographic museum, one of the largest in Europe.
We recommend MSC Cruises transfer from the port to the city, in this destination is necessary, price about 12€.
The Port of Valencia, located in Spain, is one of the largest and most important seaports in the Mediterranean Sea basin. Its history dates back to 1483 when Ferdinand the Catholic granted a privilege that authorized the city of Valencia to build a wooden bridge on the beach, marking the birth of the port.
Over the centuries, the port underwent various transformations, becoming a key infrastructure for the city. In the 19th century, modernization works were carried out, which included the construction of the canal and the first dock. Today, the Port of Valencia is ranked as the fifth busiest seaport in Europe, handling a significant amount of freight and millions of passengers annually.
Livorno is an Italian city in the region of Tuscany, capital of the province of the same name. It is one of the most important ports in the Ligurian Sea. Originally a fishing village, it became a port in 1518 by decision of Giulio de Medici. The reason for this was the silting up of the Pisan harbour with sand. The town is also known as the "new Venice". We definitely recommend a visit to the 16th century Livorno Cathedral, which was destroyed during the Second World War and reconstructed in 1959. You shouldn't miss the modern synagogue by the architect Angelo di Castro or Piazza Micheli with the Monumento dei Quattro Mori.
We recommend an optional trip with a delegate to nearby Pisa (price approx. 1 490 CZK).
The port of Livorno, located in the region of Tuscany, Italy, has a rich history dating back to the Roman times when it was known as Portus Pisanus. In the late 16th century, under the Medici family's rule, the port was extensively developed and became an important hub for trade and commerce. The Medici Port, as it came to be known, attracted merchants from all over Europe.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Livorno became a "free port", attracting a diverse population of people, including Greeks, Jews, Armenians and others who contributed to its cultural and economic growth. The port was heavily bombed during World War II, causing significant damage. However, it was rebuilt and today, it continues to be one of the major seaports in Italy, handling a wide range of cargo including oil, coal, and container traffic.
In the early hours of the morning arrive at the Italian port of Civitavecchia in the central Italian province of Lazio. The town is situated on the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 80 km west-northwest of Rome. Translated as 'Old Town', its name is the prototype of a classical Italian settlement with roots in ancient times (it has been shown that the site was inhabited as early as the Etruscans), which has undergone a wealth of development and change over its more than a thousand years of existence, traces of which are still visible today. It has been the main Roman port for more than a thousand years and today you can still visit more than a hundred churches.
The history of the Italian port Civitavecchia dates back to the 2nd century during the reign of Emperor Trajan. The port was established as the port of Rome and was originally known as Centumcellae. Its strategic location and well-constructed harbor made it a critical asset to the Roman Empire, facilitating both military and commercial operations.
Over the centuries, the port of Civitavecchia has faced numerous invasions and destructions. It was destroyed by Barbarossa in 828 AD and then rebuilt by Pope Innocent XII in the late 17th century. Today, Civitavecchia serves as a major port for ferry connections to destinations like Sicily, Sardinia and other parts of the Mediterranean. It is also a popular departure point for Mediterranean cruises.
In the morning breakfast and after disembarkation departure from the port to the Czech Republic. During the return transfer we have prepared for you two hot snacks for the journey, coffee, tea, cappuccino and chocolate and chat about the ships and new destinations.

I came to Riviera Tour from Bratislava and MSC Cruises, where I worked for 4 seasons as a crew member in the excursion department. I fell in love with life at sea there and had a lot of experiences that I can't stop talking about. On cruises with me, you'll also find out a lot of behind-the-scenes secrets. Aside from cruises, I'm a content creator. So you can reminisce about some of our experiences together through texts or videos on the Riviera Tour News pages.
