The history of Dubai, now a global metropolis and one of the United Arab Emirates’ most iconic cities, began as a small fishing and pearling village on the Arabian Gulf. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area was inhabited as far back as 3000 BCE, with early settlers relying on fishing, pearl diving, and trade. By the early 19th century, Dubai had developed into a modest trading hub under the leadership of the Al Maktoum family, who assumed control of the city in 1833. Its location along key trade routes made it a center for commerce, attracting merchants from Iran, India, and Africa.
In the 20th century, Dubai’s fortunes shifted with the decline of the pearling industry in the 1930s. However, the discovery of oil in 1966 marked the beginning of a transformative era. Under Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum’s leadership, oil revenues were invested in infrastructure, propelling Dubai into rapid modernization. Following the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, Dubai diversified its economy, focusing on trade, tourism, and real estate. Today, Dubai is renowned for its towering skyscrapers, including the Burj Khalifa, and its evolution from a humble fishing village to a global financial and cultural center epitomizes its remarkable history.
Doha is the modern capital of Qatar, captivating visitors with its contrast of traditional Arab culture and futuristic architecture. The city was founded in 1825 under the name Al-Bida; the name Doha itself derives from the Arabic ad-dawha, meaning "large tree". Key attractions include the Museum of Islamic Art with its iconic waterfront building, the modern Msheireb quarter, the traditional Souq Waqif market brimming with aromas, colours and local life, and the panoramic Corniche promenade overlooking the West Bay skyscrapers that give the city its distinctive silhouette. In the centre of Doha stands the Al-Kout Fortress, built in 1880. In 1978, the fortress underwent a complete reconstruction and today serves as an exhibition space for traditional crafts.
The history of Doha, the capital of Qatar, traces its roots back to the 18th century when it was established as a small fishing and pearling village under the name Al-Bidda. The region was inhabited by various Arab tribes who engaged in fishing, pearling, and trade in the waters of the Arabian Gulf. During the 19th century, the town began to expand, and in 1825, the name Doha was first recorded. The city became the seat of power for the Al Thani family, the ruling dynasty of Qatar, who rose to prominence in the mid-19th century and played a vital role in unifying the Qatari tribes.
Doha's development accelerated in the 20th century following the discovery of oil in the 1940s and natural gas in later decades, which transformed it from a modest settlement into a thriving modern city. The wealth generated by energy resources allowed for rapid urbanization and modernization. Despite its modern appearance, the city retains elements of its heritage, such as the Souq Waqif and the Doha Corniche, blending history with contemporary architecture. Today, Doha is not only Qatar’s political and economic hub but also a cultural and educational center, reflecting the country’s evolution from a humble fishing village to a global metropolis.
Bahrain is the smallest state in the Persian Gulf region. Its nearest neighbours are Saudi Arabia to the west and Qatar to the southeast. The country consists of the main island of the same name and 32 smaller islands, including adjacent maritime territory. The main island was separated from the Arabian Peninsula around 6000 BC. The people of Bahrain are very proud of the fact that theirs was one of the first regions within mainland Arabia to embrace Islam – and it did so entirely peacefully. In June 1932, large quantities of oil were discovered in Bahrain. As the first Gulf state to discover oil, Bahrain was also the first to enjoy the benefits that came with the revenues – reflected in improved education and healthcare. Bahrain is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Middle East, attracting around 2 million foreign visitors annually, predominantly from Arab states along the Arabian Gulf coast.
Bahrain, an island nation in the Persian Gulf, has a history that stretches back thousands of years. Known as Dilmun in ancient times, it was a major trading hub linking Mesopotamia, India, and the Arabian Peninsula as early as 3000 BCE. Dilmun was celebrated in Sumerian texts as a prosperous and sacred land. Over the centuries, Bahrain came under the influence of various empires, including the Assyrians, Babylonians, and later the Persians. During the advent of Islam in the 7th century, Bahrain was one of the first regions to adopt the new faith, becoming an important cultural and economic center in the Islamic world.
In more recent history, Bahrain was a British protectorate from the 19th century until gaining independence in 1971. Its economy, originally based on pearling and fishing, transitioned to oil production after the discovery of oil in 1932, making Bahrain the first Gulf state to exploit its oil reserves. Today, Bahrain is a modern nation known for its financial and commercial sectors, hosting a mix of ancient landmarks, such as the Bahrain Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and modern attractions like the Bahrain World Trade Center and the Formula 1 Bahrain International Circuit.
Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the main city of the emirate of the same name. With a population of 1,500,000, the city has a colourful past that includes a period as a pirate haven. Since the 1960s, it has undergone a breathtaking transformation into a modern metropolis with wide boulevards and towering buildings. Very little of the old city remains; an exception is the Old Palace, one of the oldest structures, built above a local spring. The city's landmark is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Its architecture was inspired by the mosque in Casablanca, Morocco, and it ranks among the largest in the Islamic world. It covers an area of 22,412 square metres and can accommodate 41,000 worshippers; women are only permitted entry wearing long garments covering their head (hair), arms and legs.
We anchor at a natural island approximately 170 km from Abu Dhabi. The island is the largest nature reserve and the original homeland of Arabia. Thanks to conservation efforts and ecological investments, it has become home to thousands of free-roaming animals and several million plants and trees. The reserve was established in 1977 by Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. A visit to this place is a truly awe-inspiring experience, especially for nature, fauna and flora enthusiasts, but also for anyone seeking relaxation far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The port of Sir Bani Yas in the United Arab Emirates has a long and storied history. It is located on Sir Bani Yas Island, which was a key location for the early civilization of the Bani Yas tribe. The tribe was one of the major groups that settled in the UAE, with a history dating back to the 16th century.
In the late 20th century, the island was transformed into a wildlife reserve by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the UAE. The port of Sir Bani Yas has since become a popular destination for luxury cruise ships, offering visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and historical significance.
A free day to explore this amazing city. You can take advantage of numerous optional excursions offered by MSC Cruises. The delegate will join one optional excursion (the excursion programme will be sent to you approx. 3 months before departure). The name Dubai can be translated as "meeting place". It is the most populous and the second-largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates, after Abu Dhabi. Dubai is ruled by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who serves as Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE (the head of state is the Emir of Abu Dhabi). Most of the emirate is covered by desert. The emirate has no lower administrative divisions; however, since 1954 the "Municipality of Dubai" has been responsible for the emirate's everyday affairs such as health, the environment and urban planning.

A few lines about me. My name is Helena and I have always enjoyed writing or finding new information, so I decided to study journalism. But during my studies I found another love - Korean, which gave me the opportunity to live in beautiful Seoul, South Korea. After my return, I devoted myself mainly to writing about Formula 1, which I still love now, and motorsport is still with me in my spare time. I came back to my native Wallachia, where I joined the Riviera Tour to show the beauty of the world to other people. Maybe one day I will show the beauty of South Korea to you too.
